SCHOOL PUPILS’ PROWESS. PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES. Trophies won by school teams were presented at the Stratford Primary School on Friday. The Linkhorn Cup was won by the senior football fifteen (captain, N. Davies). It was presented in 1926 by Mr. W. J. Linkhorn, Hawera, and is awarded for the South Taranaki championship under’ the auspices of the Taranaki Primary Schools Rugby Union. It has been won by the Stratford School in 1927, 1928 and 1930. This year the winning team won all its games in the central division, and the final against Okaiawa, winner of the south group. The» deciding game for the provincial championship, against Waitara, winner of the northern championship, was won by Stratford by 14 to 3. This gave Stratford a score for the season of 128 to 3 (a penalty goal). Since the inception of the Primary Schools Rugby Union in 1922 Stratford has won the Taranaki provincial championship in 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925. It won the South Taranaki championship in 1922, 1923, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928, and 1930 and was runner-up for the provincial championship in 1923, 1924 and 1928.
Altogether nine teams competed last season for the cups presented by Mr. J. K. Amesbury in 1927 as trophies for two football competitions within the school, one for seniors and one for juniors. The winners were the Bulldogs, captained by N. Davies, and the Wolves, captained by Mons Gray who took the senior and junior cups respectively. Ten teams took part in the basketball competition organised by lady members of the staff. The winning team, Light Blues, captained by Rita Kidd, won after a play-off with Orange, captained by Ngaio Sextus.
