MATTHEWS FORCED DOWN

AEROPLANE DAMAGED AIR RACE TO AUSTRALIA SEVERAL DAYS’ DELAY LIKELY. FLYING AHEAD OF THE RECORD. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 7.30 p.m. Bangkok, Sept. 28. Captain Matthews was forced down at Banmee, 100 miles north of Donmuang. The propellor and one wing were broken, and the tail of the machine was damaged. He has a spare propellor. The Minister of War from Donmuang sent men to assist the aviator. It is hoped repairs will be effected in' a few days. Captain Matthews is flying from England to Australia, and up to to-day had been making excellent progress, being a day ahead of Mr. Bert Hinkler’s record time.

When Captain Matthews left Rangoon he encountered violent weather over Moulmeiri and had to return. He made a fresh start later and was anxious to reach Singapore on the 12th day of his flight, thus maintaining his lead of a day over Hinkler.
