PROFESSOR OF LANGUAGES
APPOINTMENT AT VICTORIA. By Telegraph—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. On the recommendation of a committee specially set up for the purpose, Dr. I. H. Henning, Sydney University, was appointed to the position of lecturer in modern languages by the Victoria College Council this evening. Eight applications had been received, but Dr. Henning’s selection was a unanimous one. Dr. Henning is a graduate of Sydney University with first-class honours in French and German, says the committee in its recommendation. At the end of his course he was awarded the ,Government French travelling scholarship with which he proceeded to Paris, where he continued his studies at the Sorbonne. He was awarded the doctorate of the University of Paris for a thesis on the subject connected with Madame de Stael and the romantic movement in French literature which has been published and which is undoubtedly a solid piece of work written in excellent French. Since returning to Australia he has taken part in the teaching of French classes in Sydney University in the absence of Professor Nicholson, and has also given assistance in connection with the teaching of German. He is also familiar with Italian.
