WEST AUSTRALIAN SURPLUS

SIR JAMES MITCHELL’S BUDGET. DIFFICULTIES OF BALANCING. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Perth, Sept. 24. A feature of the West Australian Budget, submitted by the Premier, Sir James Mitchell, is a surplus of £5628. The estimated revenue is \ £19,194,559, a the expenditure £10,998,922. Sir Jamc* Mitchell said that balancing the Budget was a gigantic task, owing to the Loan Council not providing the funds which werd) ordinarily promised for State commitments. Drastic economies were therefore contemplated. The salaries of all civil servants and politicians would be reduced and there would be increases in the totalisator tax and entertainment tax, and a special tax of threepence in the pound for hospitals, collectable by stamps on wages and salaries. The Premier estimated it will be necessary to borrow £4,999,090 to pay accounts overdrawn last June. It will also be necessary to increase the revenue this year by £BlB,OOO, of which £lOO,OOO represents the increase in exchange. The Commonwealth is being asked to increase the disabilities grant to £450,000.
