Count (on) Palatine at Ellerslie. u * # * Envoy delivered the goods at Avondale. * * * # Gibraltar is to remain in Auckland for the Welcome Stakes. Make Up: too true, on the second day at Avondale. « # * * Prince of Orange is still giving punters the pip. » «. * * Te Atui.wa and Annoyer, who raced at Avondale, will stay at Ellerslie until after the A.R.C. spring meeting. s =H> # ■ # Cylinder had a neck to win the Avondale Guineas. # * •* * Sub-Editor was not at home when the Avondale Guineas Held went to press. # * * * Three New Zealand Cup candidates —Prodice, First Sight and Starshooter —won on Saturday. # * * * Royal Acre, who has done well since IVanganui, will probably start at Wellington. # • # * Lady Lulu, who has improved considerably since the Taranaki Hunt meeting, promises to be in great fettle for Waverley. =» # # * Goblin Market has been schooling well at Hawera, and the unreliable gelding may make amends for past failures when tried at this branch of the game. # # # # Mr. T. H. Lowry’s brood mares Miss Cute, dam of Clever, and Auratum (Absurd-Desert Gold) left Hawke’s Bay last week on a visit to Hunting Song in Gisborne. « # * * Count Cavour was not disgraced by his race at Ashburton. He hopped out smartly but naturally was unable to keepdiis place when the pace was turned on. He pulled up without showing signs of any ailment and may still be regarded as a horse, to be reckoned with later. # # * * Tregilla, a three-year-old Treclare colt, registered a remarkable performance in the 10-furlong novice handicap at the Sydney Tatts meeting. With 24 runners, he stood flat-footed at the barrier. He gave the leaders easily 100 yards start and then finished a close fourth. He is in the Derby and has been backed for the Melbourne Cup, in which he lias 6.13. Last Saturday he ran Balloon King to half a head in the Rosehill Guineas. # # * * Haze won the hurdle race at Ashburton in very attractive style, states a southern writer. His record on the flat was not impressive, and this prejudiced many against him, in spite of good schooling. It was his first public effort as a jumper, and he gave a fine exhibition, while he ran on solidly, giving the impression that he will make a name as a hurdler. Cragford Is Good.

Cragford, the four-year-old_ son of Eastern Monarch (himself a good but unlucky runner over distances of ground in England), by Lemberg (another proved stayer), set the, seal on his fame on Saturday by making his record for the

present season ‘‘four-in-a-line,” and. his Rosehill Cup victory was registered against such a “classy” field and in such decisive fashion that there is little doubt now as to what horse ranks as favourite for the A.J.C. .Metropolitan Handicap. An Anomalous Position. Tray Bond is down to contest the Ohapi Hack Handicap at Geraldine today. This is a maiden event for horses that have not won a race to the value of £5O at time of nomination, a condition that makes Saturday's winner eligible. Tray Bond was weighted.at 8.4 for the race, and the handicapper has no power to give her more by virtue of the rule that defines a race like the Ashburton Trial Plate as a weight-for-age event. No horse winning a weight-for-age race can be rehandicapped. Avondale Winners.

Besides being the leading trainer, F. E. Loomb was also the most successful owner at Avondale, winning £6OO with Prodice. A patron of his stable, Mr. E. H. Cticksey, was second on the list with £SSS. Other winning owners were:—T. E. Davidson, £400; A. B. Williams, £350; G. w. New, £350; W. Monteith and W. Willis, £310; R. D. Fisher, £310; Mrs. E. A. Scott, £235; T. Impey, £225; A. McKenzie, £200; A. Alexander, £200; Dr. A. M. Grant, £200; J. J. Corry, £2OO.

Lady Pam. One of the most likely candidates for the Hawke’s Bay Guineas on Saturday next is Lady Pam, who was seen in action by Wanganui racegoers in the Fixing Handicap and the New Zealand Eclipse Stakes at the recent spring meeting states “Kestrel.” In the weight -for-age event, run over a little more than seven furlongs, she finished only three lengths behind Laughing Prince and Toxeuma after getting away badly. A performance of the kind suggests that she will pay her way among the handicap horses this year. Her one trouble is her fraetiousness at the barrier, and until she can be cured of that she is not a very safe betting proposition, notwithstanding the fact that site looks certain to win races.

•Silvermine will pay another dividend soon. » a « * Eastertime had a cold last week and was scratched for Avondale. # a <» * Trainer Loomb ‘‘looms” in the limelight at Avondale with six winners. ° # # * * Baroscope had the rest pushing theii barrows on Monday. # «. # * Grand Tea was an appropriate one to finish up on at Avondale. * # * • Nominations for the Waverley spring meeting close next Thursday. .** * . * Orapai has been physicked and is having a spell. # * # * On Avondale form Supremacy will soon prove that he is appropriately named. * # ■# * There was Daylight between Make Up and Royal Visitor at the conclusion of the Grey Lynn Hurdles at Avondale on Monday. « # # * Nothing has shown more improvement at New Plynfouth lately than Green Patch, and the Acre gelding should be ready for a ‘‘killing” about Christmas time. * ’ J. T. Jamieson’s two-year-olds Tea Chat (Tea Tray-Philomela) and Ammon Ra (Limond-Hyades) have been working exceptionally well at Randwick. Both are smart -gallopers. # # * * On Top had two races at Ashburton. He showed plenty of pace, but on each occasion his finishing effort was disappointing. He will need to improve before he can be recommended as a solid racing proposition. # *> # * C. Emerson saddled up his first candidate as a trainer when he produced the three-year-old colt Standard Rose, by Rosenor from The Kies, in the Trial Plate at Ashburton. In spite of having only a few fast sprints prior to the fixture the colt ran a solid race into third place and showed a lot of determination. An improvement on Saturday’s placing can soon be looked for. * # # * Another of Weathervane’s progeny got on the winning list recently when ■Perfect Weather accounted for the Three-year-old Handicap at the Queensland Turf Club's Meeting on September 6. She was bred at Elderslie and is from the English mare Fulica, dam of Fulmar and Silver Coot. She was one of the yearlings sent by Mr. Duncan to the Brisbane sales in March, 1929, and was sold for 150 guineas.

Cragford won the Rosehill Cup with Bst. 51b., and won it well, giving exNew Zealander Ashley Reed a comfortable ride, and at the same time equalled the Rosehill track record for eleven furlongs. His record is therefore worth looking into. ■ In August Cragford hopped off by winning the Crimea- Trial Plate at Caulfield. He went on and won the August Handicap at Flemington. Then back to Caulfield, and the Heatherlie Handicap was easy for him. But this trio of successes, striking as they were, did not impress Sydney-sid-ers greatly, and it remained for the Victorian to g<\ to Rosehill and beat a good crowd in pointless style before his

Metropolitan Handicap chances were seriously considered. Cragford is weighted at 7.5 in thp Metropolitan Handicap, and if Reed takes the mount he will be a few .pounds over that impost. Nevertheless, 'his form this season has been remarkably good, and he is sure to take some beating in forthcoming engagements. Fields at Greenmeadows. Racing at Hawke’s Bay meetings lias been on the down grade for some time, but it is pleasing to note an improvement in the number of horses entered for the spring meeting, and the improved quality. The Park Handicap, one mile and a quarter, has attracted Hynanna, Singleton, Shrewd, My Own, Queen’s Choice, Balloon and others, and the Railway Handicap field includes Admiral Drake, Royal Parade, Simba, Ladv Pam, Head Sevang, Aston, Chopin, Huikai and Lordlike. The minor events have also filled well, and amongst those entered are Curie, Nae Lap, Acmil, Jayson, Jenny Diver, Little M onder and many others whose form has been promising lately. Although depression is noticeable everywhere, our Hawke's Bay sporting friends look forward to good meetings this spring. Ceremony For Ellerslie.

Appearances indicate that Ceremony will be in good fettle to give of his best in his engagements at Ellerslie at the end of next week, for he is looking in great nick. On Saturday morning, according to the Wanganui Chronicle, he proved that he still retains his speed, for on the outside of the course proper, the reverse way, he slipped over six furlongs before breakfast in a tick over 1.17, and as the lightweight who was on him did not need to move it was evident that the Absurd gelding was going well ’ within himself. As lie ran the first half-mile in 50 it seems still as mysterious 'as ever that he was unable to retain his leading position in the Flying Handicap at his only appearance at the Wanganui meeting. The Ellerslie track may suit him better than the track on which he is trained. With the other members of Rayner's team, Pomp and Pedestal, Ceremony will go north text Monday.
