OKAIAWA TENNIS CLUB

SUCCESSFUL DANCE HELD. Natives and Europeans from far and near gathered at the Okaiawa Hall on Tuesday evening for the dance held by the Okaiawa Maori Tennis Club. About 250 people were present, and the receipts, which amounted to about £27, will show a substantial net profit for the funds of the club. The appearance of many in fancy dress occasioned much interest, some of the costumes being strikingly original. Immediately the Rauru Jazz B'and struck up merriment prevailed, and under the careful guidance of Messrs R. J. and 31. Phillips, masters of ceremonies, activities never flagged throughout the evening. The parade of fancy costumes was a feature to be remembered and so good were some that the judges (Mrs. W. Johnson and Mr. J. D. Robertson) found difficulty in making a distinguishing award. For the most original costumes the prizes went to Mr. George Dundas and Mrs. Huia Puketapu, who came as a caricature “Lord and Lady Welloff.” This couple also won tlie Monte Carlo dance. The prizes for the best fancy dresses were awarded to Mr. D. Blair (Golliwog) and Miss 31. Toro (Red Indian). Miss Toro’s trophy was a handsome Maori mat made of feathers by Sirs. Puketapu, while Mrs. Puketapu's trophy consisted-of a set of poi balls. A competition for a dinner set was won by Mr. Tom Guy (Matapu). The orchestra was composed of Messrs W. Whakarua, R. Tamou, K. Williams, Joe Tamou, M. Lockett and H. Tainou, whose music was highly appreciated. Several extras were contributed during the supper interval. PERSONAL AND GENERAL. Mr. W. G. Walkley left Hawera for Wellington yesterday on North Island Motor Union business. He is expected back during the week-end. Good entries are reported to be coming in for the Kaponga Methodist flow, er show to be held to-morrow. Exhibitors are reminded that entries close this evening with the secretary, Mr. N. C. Davies. The blooms at the present time, particularly the daffodils, are reported to be at their best, and an excellent display should be seen to-mor-row.

The Alton Football Club’s annual ball will be held in the Alton Hall on Tuesday, October 7. Messrs R. P. Morrissey and Co. advertise particulars of their usual mart sale to-day at the Union Street Salerooms, Hawera. J. C. Smith advertises particulars of his mart sale for to-day, commencing at L3O p.m., when he will offer pine cones, porcelain bath, furniture in variety and fruit.
