i WIN FOR TARANAKI I I SUPERIOR RUGBY TACTICS IMPRESSIVE DISPLAY BY BACKS. TWENTY POINTS SCORED TO EIGHT (By Wire.—Special Reporter). Masterton, Last Night. Displaying superior speed, tactics and combination, the Taranaki Rugby representatives completely outclassed Wairarapa at Masterton to-day to the tune of 20 points to eight. Taranaki, which was definitely superior in both departments, gave a finished display and thoroughly deserved the handsome win. The backs were a fast, sure lot and greatly impressed with their straight running and sure handling. Galbraith and Owen were always prominent while Crawford was very sound on defence. The forwards were all solid grafters with Walter and Guy outstanding. Mill and Roach were Wairarapa’s best backs and Reid and Mc'Calmont were prominent in the pack. The teams were:— Wairarapa: Roach; Faulknor, Ford, Fuller; Mill, Nikorima; Hart; Le Quesne; K. Reid, McCalmont; Fairbrother, Churchouse, Clarke; McGregor, Knowles. Taranaki: Collins; Watson, Crawford, Petty; Galbraith, Owen; Gudgeon; Guy; Robinson, Young; Murphy, Walter, Wills; Gargan, Richards. The sun made things difficult for Wairarapa and high kicking saw the Taranaki forwards well in Wairarapa territory, .where the visitors had the better of tight scrummaging. Two passing bouts were stopped in the nick of time but a third, saw play right on the Wairarapa line, where Gudgeon set his line going" again, Galbraith, Crawford and Watsbn handling and Watson- springing across to score well out. Collins missed with the kick. From the kick-off Wairarapa looked dangerous after Mill and Faulknor had interpassed down the side-line, but a dropped pass let- the Taranaki forwards regain possession. Richards put in a good run and passed to Guy and on to Walter, and the three forwards between them took’play in a flash down--, field and over the Wairarapa line, where Walter scored under the goal. Collins converted, making Taranaki 8 points to nil. BUSTLING TACTICS BETTER. Adopting loose bustling tactics the home forwards gave much better opposition to the faster Taranaki men. Fuller and Roach were prominent in getting their side out of difficulties. After Guy and Walter had broken through from a line-out Galbraith secured and handed to Crawfosd. Petty completed a good movement with a try in the corner. Collins missed with the kick. Taranaki seemed likely to score with the forwards again when they coihbined in a splendid dribbling rush from halfway to near the Wairarapa line. Mill, however, shot through an opening and gained 25 yards before passing to Fairbrother and Churchouse, who took play to Taranaki territory. Taranaki backs were given the ball from a line-out on the half-way line and Galbraith cut in beautifully to go right to Roach at full-back. The chance was spoiled when a long pass he sent to Petty was intercepted and the .Wairarapa forwards cleared. Reid, Mill. Ford and Fuller combined in a bright move that caught Taranaki napping. Owen, however, saved the situation with a good line kick. Fuller missed a shot at goal, the third in succession. Wairarapa was in trouble when Fuller fumbled a high kick and the Taranaki forwards came downfield quickly. A penalty relieved 'the; situation. The spell ended with the scores: Taranaki H Wairarapa 0 Taranaki had had by far the better of play. Nikorima and Fuller changed places in the Wairarapa team after half time and the change resulted in the ■back-line working better. Taranaki forwards, however, were more than equal to the Wairarapa pack and were especially dangerous 'in the loose. SPECTACULAR RUSHES. Walter was unlucky not to score after he had taken a difficult pass from Owen; Mill gained a lot of ground when he cut through and beat three men to trike play well into Taranaki’s twenty-five. Owen, however, sent play back to midfield with a hefty kick. Le Quesne, Mill and Fuller took part in a good rush that ended in a line-out near Taranaki’s line but again the visiting forwards broke dear in a fine dribbling rush. RoacVsaved Wairarapa twice in succession. picking up from the onrushing forwards’ feet and finding touch. Wairarapa ,was penned on its line for a time, Owen eventually dashing across for a fine try. Petty missed' with the kick. ‘ ' V 1 Wairarapa missed three splendid scoring chances through bad handling. Taranaki forwards at length went away with the ball at toe. From scrummaging near half way they,gained more ground and were soon hammering at the home line. At length Gudgeon passed to Galbraith, who cut in to score a splendid try. Galbraith failed to convert the With fifteen minutes to go Wairarapa ( threw the ball about with effect but a-ain bad handling spoiled several good chances, while the forwards could nof gain much ground by hard packing. Fuller hit the upright with a penaltykick from half-way. From the drop out tlio forwards combined in a drabbling rush which ended in Hart s picking up and sending on to Churchouse, who scored Wairarapa’s only try. _ Fuller converted with a splendid kick, .making the score: Taranaki 17, Wairarapa 5. A few minutes later Nikorima landed a fine penalty goal for Wairarapa. Just before time the visiting forwards worked down to the Wairarapa twentyfive, where from a penalty, Collins landed a goal and the final score was: Taranaki Wairarapa **
