EMPIRE WOOL RESEARCH
NEED FOR CO-ORDINATION.
EXPERIENCES OF DOMINIONS. By Telegraph—Press Assn. —Copyright. Rec. 10.30 p.m. London, Sept. 23. A paper read at the Empire wool research conference by Mr. A. C. Rivett, Australia, stated that no attempt was made in Australia to touch the manufacturing side of the industry; that belonged to Britain. “I am convinced, said Mr. Rivett, “that an appropriate division of the work is desirable. Australia and the south are shouldering the responsibility of production and Britain of manufacturing.” Dr. Marsden, New Zealand, regretted that there was insufficient pontact between the producer and the manufacturer. There was also a lamentable lack of information in regard to attributes of wool desirable from the manufacturer s point of view and whether it was desirable to develop pedigree types of sheep as suitable as the present predominant Romney and Corriedale types to New Zealand’s relatively uniform climate. Wool might ultimately bo purchased on a fairly definite specification, thus stabilising the position. Mr. Du Toit, South Africa, said the practice of sending their students to Australia had had a marked influenceon the standard of South African wool, resulting in the Government creating a number of scholarships for research. ADDRESS BY MR. J. H. THOMAS. “COUNTRY NOT DOWN AND OUT.” London, Sept. 22. Dr. Marsden and Mr. Sidney are representing New Zealand at the wool research conference at the Imperial Institute. Mr. J. 11. Thomas, the Dominions Secretary, in his inaugural address said: ‘‘Nothing disturbs one more than hearing folks talk as if the country were-down arid out. We are having a rough passage just now, but so is every country in the world.” He was confident that the old spirit of grit and determination would pull them through, as it had done in the past. The conference will continue at Leeds and Bradford on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and at Edinburgh on Friday.
