MIGRAŢION TO CANADA
TIGHTENING REGULATIONS LABOUR CONTRACT NEEDED TOURISTS NOT AFFECTED SIMILIAR ACTION IN U.S.A. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. New York, Sept. 17. Inquiries at Ottawa elicited the information that no new restrictions on white immigration had been imposed. The only restrictions applying are in respect to the amount of money in the possession of an immigrant and a contract for labour. Owiirg to the current depression and extensive unemployment, with the coming of autumn and winter, the immigration authorities are more closely applying these qualifications than at other times. The labour contract regulation is of a year’s standing and prohibits the entry into Canada of immigrants under labour contracts, except in cases where the Minister of Immigration decides that their presence is required. The Immigration Department at Ottawa, moreover, denied the reports from Vancouver that 200 Australians seeking entry into Canada are being held up, and some of them are in danger of Lein" sent back. The officials state that only one or two Australians were detained; ... • ± Restrictions on immigration into U.S.A, of a similar nature were also announced at Washington a few days ago by the State Department, owing to unemployment in the United States. Consuls abroad have been instructed to examine applicants for visas moie closely for the purpose of' limiting the number of entries under the provision of the law which enables exclusion when there is danger of the applicant becoming a public charge. Ordinary travellers are in no way affected either in Canada or the United States.
