The trial of Michael Dennis Corrigan, engineer and ex-racehorse owner, at the /Old Bailey, where he was sentenced to five years’ penal servitude for fraud, revealed an astonishing record of crime. Corrigan, who. is 46 years of age, represented himself as employed by the Standard Oil Company at a salary of £56,000 a year. He obtained £lB,OOO from Mrs. Harrold, whose daughter he also induced to become his mistress, Corrigan being already married. Corrigan first attracted police attention when he was a second grade steward on a steamship. He then joined the Ministry of Munitions, where he called himself Major Cassidy. Later for five years he exploited imaginary concessions in Yucatan, ruining several victims. His frauds exceeded £lOO,OOO. The judge in sentencing him said Corrigan had been guilty of bad, cruel frauds. Corrigan showed no mercy. One wealthy man lost everything and was obliged to become a clerk in an insurance office while Corrigan lived in luxury at the best hotels in England and France.
