New York, Sept. 17The third race for the America Cup over a 15-mile windward course and return, at Newport, started in ideal conditions, a 12-knot breeze kicking up the sea. Th© Enterprise won, the Sham-, rock withdrawing after losing the mainsail. Both yachts crossed the line together, Shamrock holding the ,weather berth under mainsail, jib and staysail. Shamrock. seemed to a dipping her bow into ' th© waves. Captain Heard sent Shamrock across the line with the best handling of the series. Enterprise went on the port tack two minutes after the start in an apnarent effort to shake off Shamrock, which followed quickly, holding the weather position and leading y slight margin. Both were footing along in good stylo under jib topsails, Jib an At S 10 y 52 all Shamrock, for some reason not evident, went on the port tack, L terprise following. At 1125. 45 minutes after the stair, Shamrock’s mainsail billowed down on deck, partly enveloping the crew and dragging in the water. Apparently t e halyard block had carried away. The crew quickly hauled. the big sail iboard, Shamrock turning homewaid un der headsails. - j Before the accident Enterprise had worked up to the weather and was almost even. ' . Enterprise started to come round whe the accident occurred upon but returned to the course, apparently to complete the course and claim the race. BEST. She clung to the advantage, she held early in th© race un|il the mam halyard After a conference with Sir Thomas Lipton on the deck of Erin, which was standing by, Captain Heard turned after the Enterprise under headsails, but soon gave up the attempt and was taken in tow. • Enterprise took in one headsail as she continued to foam along, with spray flying from stem to stern and drenching Vanderbilt at the wheel. She completed the windward beat in 2hr 14min 15sec. Immediately on rounding the mj.rk, she broke out her spinnaker and big balloon sail, but with a lightening breeze the first four miles of the return course occupied half an hour. EnteipriSe continued to the finishing fine. . Enterprise completed the course in 3hr 54m in. Sir Thomas Lipton gave up hope of victory to-day as he witnessed the accident to Shamrock. At the same time . he reiterated that this would be his last attempt. “It seems that Shamrock cannot win,” he said. “No . single man in England can build , a million dollar yacht alone, and without that none can hope to win the cup. Hereafter it will have to be syndicate against syndicate.” ■Shamrock is ready to sail the fourth race on Thursday. It was announced late to-day that Enterprise had been officially credited with her third victory. The race committee did not consider any question, of throwing out the race.
