It has been reported that the total cost of the recent gathering at the Maori pa to pay the last respects to Sir Maui Pomare will.be in the vicinity of £BOO, £5OO of this amount being for food and provisions. It is expected that the concrete vault which contains the ashes will cost £2OO, exclusive of the proposed monument, which will cost several hundreds of pounds. To meet the .major portion of the expenses, the natives have a special fund which is controlled by the Native Affairs Department, but the local natives have decided to settle a number of accounts although not being called on to do so. It is expected that the unveiling of the memorial will take place within 12 months; Suitable designs are being sought. Tho second benefit euchre party was held on Monday evening. It was very successful, there being 28 tables occupied at cards. The prize-winners were Mrs. R. Saiien (Ist.), Miss \A Z . Mellnr (2nd.), Mrs. R. Muscbanip (bidden number); Mr. L. Billiot (Ist.)-, Air. D. Manti (2nd.), Mr. R. Neal (hidden number). 'llancing followed to music supplied by. Miss E, Taylor (piano), L. Sole (cornet) and Mrs. Locke (violin). Extras were played by Air. N. Edwin, Atesdames R. Neal and L. Sarten. All. Waters was master s of ceremonies. In the English talkie, ‘‘Under thfi Greenwood Tree;” at the Theatre Royal this week Air. John Bathen appears in the principal role. Air. Bathen is a New Zealander. He resided with his parents up in a few years in the Tikorangi district.
