FATE OF ANDREE’S PARTY

DIARY TELLS THE STORY BALLOON LANDED ON BERG ADRIFT ON BROKEN. GLACIER OVERWHELMED BY STORM By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Stockholm, Sept. 10. A message from the whaler Isbjocrn says that the diary of Strindberg, one of Andree’s companions on the fatal Arctic balloon expedition, reveals a tragic story of disappointed, hopes and heroic facing of death. It discloses that the balloon landed on a huge iceberg on July 24, 1897, after a three days’ flight. The march southwards began on July 25, and the party discovered White Island on September 17. They celebrated the discovery with a banquet in a snow house built on a glacier, but part of this broke off and they drifted to sea on October 2. The party to returned to the island on October 5, and next day they were overwhelmed by a snowstorm. The entries after that reveal advancing weakness but no word of despair until they ceased on October 17.
