FOURTH GRADE CHAMPIONS
STAR DEFEATS. WAIMATE. TEAM. BRIGHT - FOOTBALL PROVIDED. By defeating Waiih:-te by 9 points to nil in the curtain-raiser to'the TaranakiHawke’s Bay,match at Pukekura Park on- Saturday, ,the. Star team won the fourth grade championship of Taranaki and brought to an end a most successful season as far as that grade was concerned. The game for the most part wa? fast, even and very interesting to the increasing number of onlookers. . The teams were:—
Star.—O’Donnell; South, Suhr, Gore; McGauley, McFarlane; Parkin; White'; .Rutherford, Stroud; Craw, Baker, Nut,tall;.- Manning, Bower. Waiimate. —Putt; Hunia, McKay, McDonald; Dick, King; McCracken; Hansen; Walker, Laurie; Borrie, Robinson, Ganilin; Duncan, Duggan. From midfield Waimate attacked, but the Star forwards returned play, O’Donnell finding touch with a good kick. Waimate was soon in Star territory again and was successful in holding play there until McCauley, McFarlane and Suhr initiated a movement which the Star forwards carried almost to the Waimate line. <• Although receiving numerous chances the Star backs; were failing to make use of them, and it was only the dogged play of the forwards that kept the game , in the visitors’ territory. . Sustained, attack followed a good run by McFarlane, and a few minutes later South and McCauley dashed up the line for the latter to dive over, the kick failing. Again McCauley took Star ,to the attack and the forwards drove through to the Waimate line. Stern defence kept first Gore and then McCauley out after the pack had heMd from a scrum. Hansen led his forwards down upon O’Donnell, who cleared well. South dashed through and, after the forwards ha<’ carried the ball on at their toes, Parkin received to score well out.. The kick again failed. Halftime sounded with Star maintaining a steady attack. x Star opened brightly, Suhr being held up by McKay after a strong run. The ball was tapped into touch. South kicked for the corner when McDonald came across, and from the line-out Putt forced. Waimate came away well, and an infringement in front of the Star goal gave Dick an unsuccessful shot. Waimate kept play on the Star line, McCracken and King almost crossing. Good defence kept them out. McFarlan? and McCauley returned play, a hard kick allowing Putt to force. Hansen came clear, but O’Donnell after a desperate tackle threw him into touch. Putt cleared in the face of a persistent pack of forwards who were rapidly dominating the play. From another rush South received and scored well out, McCauley missing with a difficult kick. The game ended shortly afterwards with the score: Star 9, Waimate 0. Mr. N. Frost was the referee. Although the 'Star seniors finished well down the championship ladder, all the Star junior grades have played consistently sound football, and th club’s wise scheme in caring for its junior grades must bear good results in seasons to come. The club’s fourth and fifth teams have won their respective grades, while the juniors and thh’d-grade fifteens have yet to contest their finals.
