Senior-Sergeant McCrorie, of the New Plymouth police, is on sick leave. Police Inspector D. Fraser, who has been on a short visit to Wellington, returned to New Plymouth yesterday. Major Sandford left New Plymouth yesterday to visit the Hawke’s Bay troop of'Boy Scouts. He expects to return in about 10 days.

Sympathy with Mr. W. B. Grant because of the loss of his brother was expressed by the Taranaki Agricultural Society yesterday. A message from Colombo states that Mr. J. H. Scullin, Australian Prime Minister, is making excellent progress, and is expected to be completely recovered in a week.

The Justices of the Peace Association in New Plymouth on Thursday expressed sympathy with Mrs. T. Hickman and family in their bereavement. Reference was made to Mr. Hickman’s long association’ with the administration of justice.

Earl Beauchamp, Governor of New South Wales from 1899 to 1901, who is passenger by the Niagara, is going to Sydney in response to many invitations, says a Suva cable. Interviewed, he said that he was looking forward with great pleasure to re-visiting old scenes.

Madame Winnie Fraser and Mr. Ernest Short, two of the soloists for the “Hiawatha” concert, arrived in New Plymouth on Thursday. Mr. W. E. Caldow, secretary of the Royal Wellington Choral Union, arrived by the same train. Mr. John Bishop, who is to conduct the concert, arrived yesterday. The First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. V. Alexander, visited Rome on Thursday, says a British Official Wireless message. He was accompanied by RearAdmiral Chetwode, and was met by the Minister of Marine, Admiral Sirianni, and other Jiigh Italian naval and Foreign Office officials, and members of the British Embassy staff. Guests at the Criterion, New Plymouth, include Captain F. H. Chudley, Mr. and Mrs. 8. Stephenson (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. Ramsden (Woodville),.Mr. and Mrs. M. F. Saunders, Mr. McKenzie Wilson, Miss N. Jordan (Wellington) and Mr. Austin Harry (Auckland).

The death has. occurred of Mr. James Jordan, in bis 66th year. Mr. Jordan was born in Dublin. He accompanied his parents to New Zealand when he was eight years of age, and the family settled in Tauranga. He was educated at Tauranga School, Napier High School and Auckland Grammar School. , Mr. Jordan was a notable athlete, and was particularly successful in school races from 100 yards to a quarter of a mile. After leaving school he won numerous trophies as an amateur runner. As a Rugby th’ee-quarter no was a .fine player, and he played in the Auckland representative XV. and the Thames team. Mr. Jordan joined the staff of the Justice Department in Auckland, and later was clerk of court and mining registrar at Paeroa. He was then transferred to a similar position at Thames, and remained there until September, 1913, when he went to Napier, and was afterwards at New Plymouth. Mr. Jordan retired 10 years ago. He is survived by his widow, one son and two daughters. A long cortege of cars followed the funeral of Mr. W. H. Carter, New Plymouth, who was buried in the Returned Soldiers’ plot at Te Henui cemetery yesterday. Many representatives of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, the Travellers’ Association and Warehousemen’s Association, besides other bodies, attended. At the graveside the service was taken by the Rev. F. A. Parry. The bearers were Messrs. F. Hartnell and McQueen, representing the Returned Soldiers’ Association, J. Power, representing the Auckland Commercial Travellers’ and Warehousemen’s Association, R. Eaton, representing the Taranaki travellers, ami J. Logie and R. Reswiek, representing Mr. Carter’s firm of Macky, Logan and Caldwell.
