The decision of the Department of Agriculture to have imported fruits’ shipped direct to New Plymouth inspected by a local officer, instead of one from Wanganui, w as the subject of further correspondence received by the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. The department wrote that Mr. Taylor, fruit inspector, Wellington, would visit New Plymouth in a few days to make arrangements for Mr. Killeen, meat inspector at the New Plymouth abattoir, to carry out t. e work. It was urged that importers should keep down the need for local inspection as much as possible by doing their best to have all fruit brought bv" ships touching first at Auckland, where the consignments-- could be inspected by the permanent officer. Several members of the council pointed out that such a thing would not be practicable as it would mean moving cargo and replacing it specially for the purpose. It was decided to bring this and other matters to Mr. Taylor’s notice and to arrange for him to meet New Plymouth Customs agents, fruit importers, wholesalers and others interested. WATCH THE CALF PADDOCK. Dairy farmers should look to the condition of their calf paddock. Topdress liberally with lime and phosphates. Keep the grass short and when grass fails provide some succulent . substitute. Also provide plenty of clean drinking water, shelter, and a salt lick. The best calfmeal to feed is “Tui.” 10 -
