APPOINTMENT OF COMMITTEES. VARIOUS QUESTIONS CONSIDERED The monthly meeting of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present, Messrs. L. M. Moss (chairman), J. A. R. McGregor, S. F. Burgess, E. Shaw and G. E. Beamish, J. R. Cruickshank, J. W. Darby and J. McLeod. Committees for the ensuing year were appointed as follow, the president being an ex officio member of each: — Railway and Shipping. — Messrs, Cruickshank (convenor), G. Fraser, McGregor, J. McNeill and Shaw. Membership.—Messrs. Darby (convenor), Burgess, Sandford, Carter. Legislation.—Messrs. Moss (convenor), C. H. Weston, T. C. List, W. J. Penn and S. Vickers. Immigration.—Messrs. Carter, List, W. H. Moyes, P. E. Stainton, J. Cocker, W. J. Freeth, Burgess and Vickers. The Auckland Chamber of Commerce wrote asking support for its resolution that the only satisfactory way of solving the present difficulties of the Railway Department was to divorce it from political control and interference and place it under a commission or board of directors, a possibility that seemed to lie outside the order of reference submitted to the Royal Commission on railways. It was decided to reply suggesting the matter should <be brought before this year’s conference of Associated Chambers of Commerce. A somewhat similar proposal had been mentioned previously at a chamber meeting by Mr. Shaw. f The council adopted a suggestion from the recent annual meeting of the chamber that it should ask the Auckland Land Development League for particulars of its proposals for placing boys on farms. The New Plymouth Borough Council wrote that its decision that it could not contribute towards the expenses for the entertainment in New Plymouth of the English public schoolboys in February was made before their arrival, and not after. The chairman and Mr. C. H. Weston were authorised to! arrange a deputation to the council on the matter. It was pointed out by the secretary (Mr. V. Duff) that this was not actually a chamber of commerce affair, though he had acted as secretary for the committee making arrangements. The secretary of the Associated Chambers of Commerce wrote that at a meeting of his executive he had been instructed to convey to Mr. T. C. List appreciation of the manner in which he represented New Zealand at the congress of Chambers of Commerce in London, and to extend to him the thanks of the association for the efforts that resulted in New Zealand being selected as the location of the next congress. It was decided to send the letter to Mr. List in England, together with a message of greeting to -him from the chamber expressing appreciation of his work for the public school boy immigration scheme and the hope that he might ba able to further the project while in Great Britain. The twelfth congress of the Federation of Chambers of Commerce held in London forwarded the following resolu-tion:—r-“That this congress requests all federated chambers to impress on the local authorities in the larger towns throughout the Empire the need for making immediate provision for aerodromes, and suggests that social attractions should be provided there to bring people together and so to arouse interest in flying.” Mr. Cruickshank said the chamber had inched in that direction 12 months ago. The Associated Chambers of Commerce notified that the annual conference would be held at Mount Cook on October 22, 23 and 24.—The appointment of delegates. was left to the next meeting of the council. It was decided to ask the New Plymouth Tourist League to appoint a represcitative in place of Mr. Moss, who had been appointed president of the chamber. It was decided to hold the next qua - terly meeting of the chamber in November.
