LEVY FOR UNEMPLOYMENT
PROTEST BY WORKERS' ISMIOX.
By Telegraph.—Press Association
Wellington, August 26. A resolution was carried unanimously by the General Labourers’ Union last night protesting against the decision in the Unemployment Bill to levy a flat tax of 30s, annually on the male section of the population to relieve unemployment.
“We consider this proposal is unjust and unfair to the minimum wage worker whose annual earnings are £l3O, and that it is obviously unjust to ask him to pay 30s. annually, tho- same as persons with incomes ranging up to £20,000 a year,” the resolution added. “It is considered that as workers are not responsible for the unemployment problem they should nob be unjustly taxed, to provide against lbs effects on the community, and an appeal is made to Labour organisations, both Industrial and. political, to oppose this vicious principle, and to Labour members in Parliament to fight the proposal tooth and nail."
