HAWERA COMPETITIONS
MUSIC, ELOCUTION, DANCING OPENING SESSIONS YESTERDAY. LARGE NUMBER OF ENTRIES. At the conclusion ,of : .the. first -session yesterday bf the Hawera competitions for 1930, Mr. JV. fl. Dixon, ChristchUrch; • who is adjudicating- in'.the musical'and ’ i’oeal section, commented that lie had .' pften heard of Hawera as a musical ■ town. He could now judge for- himself if this were so and lie commented on the excellent array of talent before him during the morning. The entries are about on a par with last: year’s,: which constituted a record. All classes are well-filled, with lemarkably few last minute withdrawals, while the ’standard was high. The weather conditions were unfortunate but’ there were record attendances at the morning and afternoon sessions yesterday, the public support being a feature. At the conclusion of the afternoon's proceedings the school choirs gathered on the stage and sang “Away With Melan-.' choly,” udder the baton of Mr. Dixon.; The!,, various . units worked well; ' the massed choir’s item providing a pleasing finale. ...;' ?:■ ' There was not a hitch in the conduct of the competitions yesterday,, this reflecting credit on the organising ability of tjie committee; Messrs. F. W. Horner (chairmanj, J. W. Velvin, H. E. Cressey, A. JE. 'Morris, J. C. Findlater and T. F. McKenzie (honorary secretary). ': The judges, who are all .well-known musicians, having officiated at other important festivals, are: Vocal and in-, strumental music, Mr. W. H. Dixon (Christchurch); elocution, Mr. J, W. Bailey (Auckland); dancing,' Miss Madeline Vyner (Wellington). Airs. J. D. McQuin was official aceompaniste. Results at yesterday’s session are:— RECITATION in costume, boy or girl, under 12 years..
