L. GIBSON MEMORIAL FUND
ARRANGEMENTS IN STIiATI’ORD. The_Mayor, Mr. P. Thomson, presided over a meeting of the Lance Gibson memorial committee in Stratford last night. There were also present Messrs. J. C. "Robins and W. L- Kennedy (East Egmont Committee), Mr. T. R. Anderson (Stratford County Council), Mr. R. J. Kay and Dr. W. P. Gordon (Mountain Club), Mr. L. E. Lyons (ex-service-men), Mr. P. Skoglund (town clerk) and Mr. S.'A. Ward (borough council). The chairman explained that he had communicated with, mayors, chairmen of county councils and presidents of' returned soldiers’, organisations in Taranaki, asking them to appoint committees for raising funds in their localities. A central committee would direct activities. A c,ommimttee had already been set up in New Plymouth, and another was being formed at Hawera. Mr. Kay was appointed secretary of the Stratford committee, and Mr. Robins treasurer. , - An appeal with, subscription lists at newspaper offices, borough aild county offices was suggested, but the chairman 'thought something more should be done and advised following a procedure similar to the earthquake appeal, where cards were distributed to every house' and collected later. After, discussion it was decided- to adopt this procedure in Stratford borough, with Mr. W. Dwyer as canvasser. Cards would also be posted to country residents with the request that subscriptions be forwarded by a stipulated date to the local dairy factory "managers or other person appointed. The names of individual subscribers would be handed to the Press and the treasurers would supply progress reports of the aggregate amounts received.
