Although the amusement tax has been imposed the Rugby Union has decided at to-day’s match to carry the tax on the gate' itself. For the Urenui Church fancy dress ball on Wednesday next there are many fine prizes to he competed for —fancy, poster and plain —and this year the prettiest evening frock. St. George’s free bus willrun from Waitara. The ladies’ church committee has been holding a very successful series of cribbage evenings. An illustrated lantern lecture is to be given in St. Andrew’s Church, New Plymouth, on August 27 at 8 p.m. The lecture is upon Palestine and Syria and is to be given by the Rev. J. D. McLennan Wilson. Mr. Wilson spent over two years in Palestine and is thoroughly familiar with the history and geography of the lands. The proceeds of the lecture are to be devoted to missionary funds.

The annual meeting of the New Plymouth branch of the League of Nations Union is to be held in the Y.W.C.A. hall, Powderham Street, on Thursday. The executive has been fortunate in securing the services of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Douglass, of Friends’ School, Wanganui, who will give addresses, accompanied ’with lantern pictures, upon their visit to the tenth assembly at Geneva last September. Mr. and Mrs. Douglass spent a fortnight at Geneva purposely to learn first hand of the doings of the. league. Mrs. Douglass will speak upon women’s work in the league.

More than usual interest is being taken in the final New Plymouth ingleside which will take place at the Agricultural Hall on Monday night. Judging by the enthusiastic remarks being made by followers and even by those less interested in these Scottish gatherings, the New Plymouth Caledonian Society expects a record crowd. Horse fairs are to be held by Newton King, Ltd., at Stony River and Waiwakaiho on Tuesday and I’hursday of next week. Splendid' entries have been received for both fixtures and farmers wanting good horses will have the opportunity of securing them at these sales. See auction columns for further particulars.* " . • The outstanding feature in an attractive window display exhibited by the Shell Company in the-Imperial Hotel buildings, New Plymouth, during the past two days has been a cinematograph film showing how a motor-car operates from within the cylinders. This film won the £5OO prize at the British Motor Show at Olympia, London. Next week the Shell Company hopes to display a working model of a motor-car engine cut in sections to demonstrate the working parts.
