TARANAKI MEN’S CHANCES BRIGHTGRIFFEN THE FIRST IN ACTION. (By Wire—Special to News.) Palmerston N., Last Night. Eric Griffen (Inaha) was the only member of the Taranaki boxing team to be called on for a bout on theopening night of the championships and he won his preliminary, defeating R. Johansen (Wanganui). Griffen was not seen at his best, having to take off 91b since Sunday and scaling 11.3 J as against his opponent’s 10.12, Griffen had the better of the first round, using his left to advantage and doing well in the close work. In the second round Johansen made the better showing. He scored heavily to the body and landed to the face but by no means had matters his own way, Griffen’s left doing damage. The final round was very fast, Griffen holding the advantage though he was very tired at the gong. He should benefit by the bout, however. Of the middleweights seen to-night it seems Griffen’s more serious opponents will bo G. McEwan (Southland), last year’s light-heavy champion who defeated Cowan (Ashburton) after a good bout, and J. Connors (Wellington), who secured the only knock-out last evening. R. Furze (Waitara), welter candidate, scaled 41b inside the limit, while D. Roebuck (New Plymouth), flyweight, scaled half a pound over. Roebuck will easily make the weight to-morrow. Both will be seen in action to-morrow afternoon or evening. Furze should have no trouble in accounting for either Ferguson (Hawke’s Bay) or Luttrell (Napier), to-night’s winners, but Crofts (Wellington) and Lowe (Otago), who have not been seen in action yet, are considered to have a great chance of extending the Taranaki champion.. Furze is spoken of very highly here. Of the bantams Higgs (Wellington) won his bout mainly by hard hitting but he is weak at in-fighting. W. Adams (Hamilton) also showed very clever .evasion and neat work in defeating Cullinane, an aggressive flyweight from Timaru. If Roebuck can produce last year’s form he should be able to hold his own with either of to-night’s winners.
