DEADLOCK IN IRON TRADE

PROPOSAL TO EMPLOY FEMALES WORKERS REFUSE TO DISCUSS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Aug. 19. When the employers in the ironworks industry approached the Arbitration Court recently with proposals for important amendments to the award covering the manufacturing section of the trade the Court directed that the matter be referred to the Conciliation Council to enable the parties to endeavour to reach an agreement. The. employers’ proposals were meant to provide for the dilution of labour, partly by the employment of females. To-day the parties met before the Conciliation Commissioner, representatives of both sections being present from the four main centres. The conference ended in a complete deadlock as the union representatives refused to discuss the. employers’ proposals. • ,
