CYCLING

BE VIEW OF LEAGUE EVENT. (By "Pedaller Palmer.”) Saturday’s race from New Plymouth to Urenui and return was over an. ideal road-racing course. There was plenty of variation ‘in the route, and it should be a favourite course with the members of the New Plymouth League Cycling Club. Les Claffey demonstrated by winning the event that, although he is the club’s veteran, he is no past number. Les was riding very neatly on Saturday, and if he retains his form he should ride well in the mountain race. “Mick” Sole rode a good race to gain second place. C. Gilbert is riding very consistently. In his past three starts he has gained a first and fastest time, second, and third last Saturday. Roy Sole rides in moods. He has won two road races this season, but last Safur'day he tired over the concluding stages. H. Cavaney does not seem to have struck form yet. Alec Ellis put up a splendid ride on Saturday, when he rode off the same mark as Sid McCann, and stayed with the big man till the finish. Sid easily sprinted Ellis at the finish, but he did not forget to praise Ellis for Hie help he gave him during the race. The pair certainly worked well together, and neither shirked a lap. The B grade riders held their first race of the season on Saturday, and there were several new and promising boys among them. , . The field for the messengers’ race was the biggest this season. The boys are keen. Tuffery was absent on Saturday, and Horner could not make up the big handicap. •
