MANUTAHI DAIRY COMPANY

INCREASES in production. ADVANCE PAYMENTS OF Is Gd MADE Air. S. C. ■ Tonks presided over the annual 'meeting of shareholders of the Manutahi Co-operative Dairy 'Company yesterday. . In their 21st annual report the directors stated that the price realised for the company’s produce shipped on open consignment had enabled them to make advance payments of Is 6d per lb for butter-fat supplied to the end of November and Is -id per lb for butter-fat supplied over the balance of the season. The amount to the credit of the appropriation account would provide for a further payment to suppliers, but until the balance of the cheese unsold was disposed of and the account sales were to hand it would not be possible to state what amount would be available for distribution. The statistics for the season were as follows, the figures in parentheses indicating the increases over the previous season:—Pounds of milk received, 8,567,076 (83,335); pounds of butter-fat, 365,492.6 (15,268.2); pounds cheese made, 914,211 (903); pounds creamery butter made, 59,094 (54,838); pounds whey butter made, 22,235 (6704); average' test, 4.26; average grade, cheese 91.955, creamery butter 92.724, whey butter 89.099.

The weight of butter made from each pound of butter-fat used for the manufacture of butter was 1.225021 b. The weight of cheese made from each pound of butter-fat used for the manufacture of cheese was 2.8661 b.

In moving the adoption of the report and balance-sheet the chairman expressed regret that prices received (luring the season bad not been as satisfactory as had been hoped for. Nevertheless he felt confident that when all the produce was sold the average pay-out would bo about Is Gd; and that was equal to the price received by most factories.

There had been a distinct slump in the market, why he did not know, and he did not think there was a man in New Zealand that did. It was pleasing co note that production had increased despite the fact that one of the largest herds had been lost and had not

been replaced. There was no doubt that the quality of cheese had deteriorated a great deal, and the cause of the deeline in quality was a question that was giving scientists and the dairy division great concern. In connection with grading at Patea the company had done very well, having graded fifth with die se, second with butter and first with whey butter. The report and balance-sheet were ’adopted. Messrs. R. S. Scown, H. Cornwall and C. Wills were elected to the vacancies created on the directorate by the retirement of Messrs. Scown, Cornwall and A. F. Wills. Mr. A. F. Wills did not seek re-election. Mr. S. R. Veitch was re-appointed auditor. Votes of thanks were accorded the chairman, the directors, the manager and stat and the secretary. At a subsequent meeting of the directors Mr. Tonka was re-elected chairman. MEREMERE NOTES. EUCHRE PARTY AND DANCE. There was a fair attendance of residents at the fortnightly euchre party ■ and dance held at Meremere on Tues- ' day evening. Some interesting and ex- ; citing games were witnessed. The ladies’ I first °prize was- won by Mrs. B. L. Bloor I and the men’s first prize by Mr. J. Davison. Consolation prizes were won respectively by Mrs. D. T. Gardner and Mr. Hardwick. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mr. Murray. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Murray and Mr. Savage. Mr. J. Bloor acted as M.C. The final euchre party and dance of the season will be held next Tuesday, when the points prizes will be awarded. There is a good growth of grass throughout the district, the last few days having been suggestive of an early spring. As a result milk supplies are now showing an increase at the factory, which is running every other day. Mrs. A. E. Williams has returned from a holiday in the Waikato. Mr. Percy Saxton, of the Waikato, is a visitor to the district.
