When the fire broke out Gosson.and his son yvere asleep on the premises. They were awakened by the noise and smoke, Mrs, Gosson was absent. The insurances are not yet available; The brigade, despite most strenuous efforts, was unable to get the flames' under ' proper' control owing to Eastbourne's poor water supply. A message was dispatched to the city j for help and a pumping engine was sent)from the Thorndon ’ fire station arid I the fire was quenched 15 minutes after its arrival with water from the harbour. Without this aid the whole . block of houses would probably have been lost.

Besid’S Gosson’s store the premises destroyed ore the house of Air. Ross and daughter and one owned by Mr. Alorganti and occupied by Air. P. Fitzgerald. A fourth house, only re-erected after being burnt three months ago, was scorched. Ihe insurances are not yet available.
