RUMAWAY WAGGON

HORSES OUT OF CONTROL. . PLUCKY PURSUIT BY CONSTABLE?' A runaway delivery waggon, with a boy on the seat, caused excitement in Cumberland Street, Dunedin, on Saturday morning, and had it not been for , the plucky and determined efforts of Constable 'Crosbie the incident might have had a serious ending. The driver of the vehicle was delivering goods at the corner of Dundas and Cumberland Streets. The horses were standing quietly, but during the driver s, brief absence at a house, the boy, who apparently was seeking a ride, climbed up. on to the van. The horses became frightened and a few seconds later the vehicle, quite , out of. control, was careering along Cumberland'Street. When Constable Crosbie saw the runaway 'he jumped upon the running board of a car and started, on a stern chase. Catching ,up .with the waggon at Water Street Constable Crosbie made an effort to check the horses as they took the corner, but he was hurled to the ground and slightly injured. However, he was soon on the car again and eventually caught up with the waggon again when the horses slackened speed for a moment. to avoid a train.

The constable managed to secure a firm grip on the reins, and although ha was swung from the ground he stopped tho team. In the meantime the lad clambered to the ground and disappeared.
