A British official wireless message states that Lord Birkenhead passed a quiet night and that his condition on Sunday was slightly better. • ■ < The death is reported from Sydney of Mr. H. T. Hamilton, a former judge of the New South Wales District Court and quarter sessions, a leading golfer and vicepresident of the „Royal Agricultural Society.
The GovernorrGeneral, Lord Bledisloe, and Lady Bledisloe will leave. Wellington for Christchurch to-day and will return to Wellington on Sunday morning, states a Press Association message. His: Excellency presided at a meeting of the Executive Council yesterday. i The swimmer Miss Mercedes Gleitze has married Mr. Patrick Carey, an engineer of Dublin, says a London cable. She will go immediately to the Continent en route to Constantinople, where she intends to swim the Hellespont.
The Rev. A. N. Scottar (president) and Mr. R. F. Peake (vice-president) of the Methodist Conference, will visit New Plymouth during the coming week-end. They will confer with the men of the church on Saturday evening and occupy the pulpits of the churches on Sunday. . The Acting-Primate, Dr. T. H. Sprott, Bishop of Wellington, arrived in New Plymouth last night by the mail train. His lordship will hold confirmations in St. Mary’s Church to-day and to-morrow at 7-30 p.m. He will stay at the vicarage till Thursday morning, when ho will leave for Palmerston North to fulfil a number of-, engagements. Guests at the Criterion, New Plymouth, are Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Burgess, Mangorei, Mrs. C. J. G. Vogel, Wellington, Miss F. MacDonald, Wellington, Mr. W. Hamton, Wanganui, Mr. F. The funeral of Captain W. H. Hawkins took place at Te Henui Cemetery yesterday. The burial service was conducted by the Rev. J. D. McL. Wilson, Who paid a tribute to the' good qualities of Mr. Hawkins. The coffin was borne to the graveside by Messrs Percy, Rugby, William and Pat Hawkins, sons, and by Messrs. A. W. Allardyce and R. H. Baillie.- The gathering included representatives of the Presbyterian Church, ex-servicemen, members of the Masonic Lodge .and others associated "with the public and 6 emi-public bodies in which Mr. Hawkins had been interested.
