BURGLARS’ EFFORTS FAIL
SAFE 'WITHSTANDS ATTACKS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Aug. 11. Detonators and fuses were used by burglars in an unsuccessful attempt to blow, open a safe at G. F. Browne’s furnishing warehouse, Courtenay Place. How an entrance to the building was effected is a mystery, ■ The safe contained about £4 in silver and a ledger and books. It was removed from the- office, which is 20 feet from the front door, and taken to the rear of the warehouse, 90 feet away. Marks showed that determined efforts were made to hacksaw the door off the safe without success. Next a corner of the safe, about 2in by lin, was sawn off, which left an aperture large enough to insert a fuse and detonator. Something must have gone wrong, for the fuse did not burn, going out after merely scorching the inside of the safe, Further attempts to open the safe were abandoned.
