WAITARA HARBOUR BOARD

■ DISPOSAL OF LEASES. The monthly meeting of the Waitara Harbour Board was held on' Friday evening. In the absence of the chairman, Mr. J. Hine, who is indisposed, Mr. W. It. Johns presided. Consent was given to the assignment, of a sub-lease of the Waitara Hotel from Mr. J. Shea to Mr. W. C. Leach-, of Paraparaumu. A similar request was granted in connection with the Bridge Hotel from Mr. D. McPherson to Mr. SJ McAfee. The lease of section 4, block 42, from the board to Mr. 11. B. Ewens was executed.

The secretary reported that of 10 grazing leases submitted to auction five were sold to T. Rattenbury (3), W. Sofie II) and J. Baddeley ’ (1).

An offer by- Mrs. 0. Bcrnsten of £4, the annual rental of four sections in Waitara cast, was accepted, as was an oner by Tommy Kaingaru of the amount of rates for three in Waitara east at- £7 ss. Four other offers .were received for unsold b ases, but as the offers were rather low the secretary was instructed to interview the applicants with a view of coming to an arrangement. The Seaside Society wrote thanking the board for its offer regarding the control of a piece of land near the seaside reserve, but the cost of fencing, clearing noxious weeds and planting trees was beyond tlie society’s financial resources.

It was decided that the works committee report at the board’s next meeting oh the cost of the fencing, etc. ’The secretary reported' having notified lessees to clear,noxious weeds. In most cases a Mart had been made. •The works committee had inspected the south wall erosion and repairs had .been authorised and would be commenced as soon as conditions were favourable. The action of the works committee was ’ confirmed and it was decided to withhold action for one month in respect to lessees who had .not complied with the request- to clear noxious weeds. The secretary reported that an arrangement had been made with the borough council to “Col fix” the wharf decking, and it was expected the work would be. commenced this month. The following notice of motion was tabled by Mr. E. A. Dugdale: That this board plant trees on the beach reserves on both sides of the river, and that the Forestry Department be asked for help and advice.

The annual card match for the Garth Cup, which is played for by the various societies of the town, took place on Friday evening. The results were: Legion of Frontiersmen defeated Druids 30 to 22;. Foresters defeated Fire Brigade 32 ,to 29. The Bowling Club and Soldiers’ Club did not enter teams". The final- will take place next Friday evenirigj when the Legion and Foresters will meet.
