TROUBLE WITH BRIDGE
MOVEMENT OF CYLINDERS. Engineers of the New South" Wales .Main Roads Board have been investigating the condition of Belmore Bridge, on the borders of West Maitland, where a pair of cylinders have shiftcid--6ne 27inl and the other lOin. Heavy steel .ropes have been attached to the abutments to prevent further movement. . ' . After the recent flood the bank behind the" piers cracked and appeared to/ be settling down, probably as'-a result' of the channel having been deepened considerably." ' W ’ Similar trouble, was experienced with the same cylinder in 1877,-10 years after . the bridge was built. The full length of. the pillar is 70ft.j' so that there would be 34ft. below the water. The diameter at the top is 3ft. Tiffi, and this extends to 6ft. 6in. at the 'bottom. The cylinders are filled with concrete and rest on a bed of hard clay. ’ .'.j'
