URENUI BOWLING CLUB. At the annual meeting of the Urcnui Bowling Club Mr. S. Topless presided over a fair attendance. The report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted. The report was as follows: As happens with all such clubs the initial dilliculties have been numerous and have at times given the committee very great concern, but having been met in the right spirit, both by the committee and members generally, they have one by one. been surmounted. Perhaps- the greatest obstacle to the laying down of the green was the clearing of pine roots, which had encroached extensively and proved a tougher proposition than at first expected. To secure a reliable foundation the whole of the turf and topsoil was ploughed’ and removed and replaced by 70 lorry loads of soil taken from Mr. S. Toplesis’ river flats. The green, was established, timbered, fenced and the grass sown all in one season, but the young spring grass would not stand up to the drastic preparation that was necessary in order to open towards the end of last bowling season, and very re-

luctantly the club had to postpone the opening until the coining season. Roller, lawn mower, kitties and discs we have in hand, and the building of a pavilion, tool shed and entrance gates is arranged for and will be completed in plenty of time.. But for a large amount of free labour already given to the green site the expenses would have been well over £5OO, and although we have done our utmost to keep down expenses wages for the past year have been £53 Ils !)d. This indicates that for a year or two, until we get on a sounder financial footing, we shall have to pull together and each contribute his share of voluntary labour. The green has recently been scythed after its winter spell, and is looking really well, but a working bee is urgently needed for another systematic weeding, The membership is 38, to which we expect a considerable addition as soon as the playing season commences. Mr. Hardwicke, of Messrs Hardwicke and Robertson, has presented a pair of bowls in a case for club competition. The Waitara Bowling Club invited Urenui players to its green throughout last season and until the Urenui green is in

j playing condition. (. We have valued the property ex-.-tremely lov/ considering the amount of j free labour and improvements already . effected, and yet we can show a small ' balance of assets over liabilities. j- The report expressed appreciation of .assistance received from numerous people. The election of officers resulted:— President, Mr. S. Topless; vice-presi- ( dent, Mr. R. H. Pigott; executive committee, Messrs F. Healey, G. Salway, ; J. F. Phillips, R. H. Pigott, J. Guthrie, and W. 11. Fuller; green warden, Mr. R. H. Pigott; honorary secretary, Mr. L. C. Bieheno; honorary treasurer, Mr. G, N. Fuller. GENERAL AND PERSONAL. ■Dairy cows are rapidly coming into profit and the bobby calf lorries are collecting more calves daily, In spite of the unfavourable climatic conditions prevailing and the resultant retarded early spring growth of pastures a plentiful supply of hay, ensilage, etc., is available on most farms where owners are reaping the benefit of ensiling or stacking the surplus growth. The planting of shelter belts and hedges is rapidly coming into favour and will play a prominent part towards increased production and the well-being of stock generally. .
