Westport yesterday morning and proceeds to Auckland to-day. (U.S.S. Co.). The Opihi left Dunedin yesterday for New Plymouth, where she is due on Tuesday, via usual ports. ftI.S.S. Co.) The Hauturu is due at New Plymouth from Onehunga to-fnorrow and will return to the northern port on Monday. (Northern Co.) The John leaves Lyttelton to-day for New Plymouth, where she is due on Wednesday, via Wellington. Later she proceeds to Port Waikato. (Hooker Bros.). The Progress loads at Dunedin on Monday for New Plymouth, where she is due on August 11, via Oamaru, Timaru, Lyt- ’ telton and Wellington. (Hooker Bros.) The Totara. left Lyttelton on Wednesday for New Plymouth via Wellington. She is due at New Plymouth to-morrow and proceeds to Wellington for survey on Monday. (U.S.S. Co.). The Kanna loads 359 tons at Greymouth about Tuesday for New Plymouth, where she is due on Thursday. Returning to Westport the vessel loads •500 tons of Stockton coal for New Plymouth, later proceeding to Auckland. (U.S.S. Co.). KIWITEA DISCHARGES. The Uneon Company’s vessel Kiwi tea arrived at Few Plymouth yeste r di-y morning from Portland with 221 tons of I cargo from Sooth Australia and Melbourne. She left late in the afternoon I for Wellington to continue discharge and will sail later for Lyttelton, Timaru and Dunedin. PORT FREMANTLE LOADING. The Commonwealth and Dominion Line motor-ship Port Fremantle, which I has been loading New Zealand produce for England at Auckland, was to sail at 5 o'clock ■ last evening for Gisborne, where she will complete her cargo. The vessel is to be dispatched from G.sborne for London, via Panama, carrying meat and dairy produce loaded at Now Plymouth recently. MAHANA’S HOMEWARD VOYAGE. The Shaw, Savill and Albion liner Mahana, which left Auckland on June 25 for Halifax and London, arrived at Halifax- on July 25 and sailed again the following day. The vessel carries 20,393 boxes of butter, 5968 crates of cheese and 12.600 freight carcases of meat loaded at New Plymouth during the second week in June. FRENCH 60.090-TON LINER. The Compagnie Generale Transatlantique has now definitely placed the order with the St. Nazaire shipyards for the construction of a 60,000-ton liner. She is to. be 1000 ft. long, lllMt. in the beam, and will draw 37|ft. The engines will be 120,000 horse-power, designed to give a speed of 28 knots. The vessel is expected to be ready for service in April, 1933, BAUER -WACH TURBINES. The contract placed with William Beardmore and Co., Ltd., Dalmuir, for the manufacture of exhaust steam turbines on the Bauer-Wach system to be installed in large Clan Line vessels represents one of the largest single group of orders yet placed f>r such installations. The work is to be carried out during the present year and will provide employment for several hundred men for a number of months. When 1 the work is completed the Clan Line wi-1 j have about 20 ships fitted with the system, which is sufficient proof of its efficiency and economy. Beardmores have built, or have now in course of construction. as manv as 40 sets of BauerWach turbines, they being one of the first firms in the country to realise the I possibilities of the system. In addition ito the Clan Line, six P. and O. liners have already been equipped and two. more are being fitted with exhaust turbines. Other companies which have adopted the system include the British India, the ITain Line, the Commonwealth and Dominion Line, the Lines, the Anchor Line and the Booth lane. NEW BANK LINER. The Bank Line motor-ship Irisbank, first of six 15-knot motor-driven cargo vessels being added to the Nev; YorkFar East service" of the line, left New York last month on her maiden voyage to Manila, Hong-Kong,’ Shanghai arid Taku Bar. The five other vessels now under construction are the Lossiebank, Taybank. Tweedbank, Foylcbank and Laganbank. The Lossiebank was scheduled to follow on July 10. The Iris--1 bank was built by Workman, Clark, | Ltd.. Belfast. She measures 425 ft. he- ' tween perpendiculars and has a beam of 57ft. Her gross register is 5626 tons I and her net register 3437 tons She has 14SC0 cubic feet of refrigerated space for 'eggs and milk and 9100 cubic feet of refrigerated space for fruits. Space is provided in fore and aft tanks for about 247 tons of latex. She also ;has space in No. 3 hold and the after deep tanks and tunnel tanks for 1373 tons of ’Ulk nil. The propulsion machinery consists of two sets of Sulzer type of Diesel eii'i'ines operating twin screws. On . her official trials she developed a speed of 151 knots. COASTAL STEAMERS CONVERTED. Three coastal steamers are at present .at Amk'and being converted into motor ships. ’ T iiey are the Richardson Line steamers Awahou and Pukehu and tac I South Ta r anaki Slipping Company’s 1 steamer Kapuni. Each vessel will have ite steam engines replaced ay I'airbanksMorse motor' engines. The change is being carried out owing to th j more economical running cost of <.he motor engines. Last year the Richardson Company had the small steamers Koutuni and Kcau converted from steamers to motor shins at Auckland.
