PATEA FIRE BRIGADE

THE ANNUAL MEETING HELD. The Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottom) presided at the annual meeting of the Patea Volunteer Fire Brigade, which was attended by a number of councillors and visitors. The following report was adopted:—The membership of the brigade continues at full strength, and m addition there is the greatest keenness among members in connection with their work. This is evidenced by the excellent ■ attendance at musters, of which there have been 35 during the year, the attendance being well above the average. During the year the brigade received five calls to fires, doing good work in each case. • Service honours gained during the year were: Gold star for 25 years’ service, Branchman E. Nielson; silver bar. 23 years’ service, Fireman C. Adams; silver 3 bar, for 21 years’ service, Hydrantman i C. H. Carey; silver bar for 17 years ser- • vice, Fireman R. Willis; silver bar for I 15 years’ service, Fireman A. Carey; sil- ■ ver . bar for 7 years’ service, Foreman L W. Willis;' certificates for three years’ • service, Branchman G. Macken, Fireman R. Adams. i Competitions were won as follows: First shield competition, M. Fitzwater 1, ’ K. Fitzwater 2; second shield competition, R. Adams 1, F. Stanford 2; third i shield competition (Cooper trophy), W. Willis 1, C. Carey 2. Final competition for the Christensen Shield was won by Hydrantman C. Carey. The eompeti- • tion for L. F. D. Winchester’s medal was won by M. Fitzwater, C. Carey being , runner-up. The brigade was represented at the Eitham competitions held during the year, Patea’s representatives, though not winning any events, acquitting themselves'well. The chairman congratulated the brigade on the year’s working, remarking that he thought the Patea brigade possessed more gold star men in its ranxs thaw any other brigade in Taranaki. The chairman then proceeded to instal the following officers: —Captain F. Fitzwater, Lieut. G. Willis, Secretary W. Coad, Foremen W. Sedgeman and W. . Willis, Branchmen G. Macken and E. Nielson, Hydrantmen C. H. Carey and N. Coad, auditors, Messrs. F. T. Ray and E. Nielson. Messrs. C. Adams and C. Carey were appointed to combine with the officers in committee. The sum of £5 was voted the secretary as an Jionorariuni in recognition of ; his services. Following the business of the meeting, a toast list was honoured. PATEA PERSONALS.' Mr. 'and Mrs. A. Prescott are holidaymaking in Auckland. Miss L. Haswell has returned to Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. H. Brennan have left Patea to reside in New Plymouth. Captain Tinney- has been discharged from the hospital and has resumed his duties as harbourmaster. Captain MacLaughlin has left to rejoin the SJ3. Kapuni in Auckland. Mr. and Mrs. S. Huston, Kakaramea, leave shortly to reside in Matamata. Dr. E. Gunn was a recent visitor to Patea and district. \ MOKOIA NOTES., FARMERS’ UNION DEMONSTRATION The ‘ president, Mr. L. F. Bell, of the Mokoia-Whakamana branch of the Farmers’ Union, presided over an exceptionally large meeting of members on Wednesday evening. The meeting was held for the purpose of hearing addresses by Mr. Thompson, Government veterinarian, Wanganui, and Mr. Denize, Government veterinary surgeon, Hawera. They delivered very interesting addresses on the general complaints and ailments of cows and sheep, and the treatment necessary to counteract or relievo them. Practical demonstrations are to he given by the two lecturers next Wednesday at 11 o’clock, at Mr. T. E. Bickford’s farm, Mokoia. The stock to be used will be supplied by neighboriring farmers. A further demonstration is to be carried out at 1 o’clock, on Mr. H. R. Scott’s farm, Whakamara. Mr. J. Gulliver. will supply the stock on this occasion, and as one of the cows may he killed for beef, the surgeons will then be able to impart valuable information to the fanners. The union hopes to see a large attendance of members and friends at both demonstrations. Hearty votes of thanks were accorded both speakers at the termination of the addresses and questions. Supper supplied by the Mokoia members was dispensed. The president intimated that an address on swine husbandry would he delivered by Mr. Gorirnge at Whakamara on Wednesday, August 20. The Mells dairy factory commenced manufacturing cheese yesterday. Despite the cold weather prevailing, the daily supply of milk is showing an increase over the corresponding period of last year. Bobby calves are causing keen com-, petition between buying firms, and what with the low price of produce and extra taxes, farmers are inclined to accept the high cash price rather than an advance now and a bonus’later. /' 1 Liimbs have been making their appearance during the last 10 days/ arid the continued cold- weather is causing the owners some anxiety; HAWERA COMPETITIONS ENTRIES. TOTAL ABOUT EQUALS LAST YEAR With a good response in the children’s section, entries for the Hawera Competitions will be much the same as last year, being in the vicinity of 650. Entries in the ladies’ classes are fairly, good, but in the men’s section they are disappointing. The Presbyterian choir, New Plymouth, will be a prominent competitor in the choir class. HAWERA AERO CLUB’S HANGAR. ONE OF BEST IN DOMINION. A compliment to the hangar of the Hawera Aero Club was paid in a letter received yesterday. The communication, from the Otago Aero Club, states; “The Director of Air Services has referred us to you, as possessing one of the best club hangars in New Zealand, for information regarding measurements for doorways, including height and types of doors, best suitable for hangars.' We are now in a position where we can proceed’ with ’ providing hangars and will be glad of any information or suggestions yon can give ns as to what yoq have found host. . ’ . • ■ .) ••(! vrd....
