KENT AIR CRASH

SOCIETY IN MOURNING. ■ —- a PATHETIC FACTS REVEALED. , London, July 22,; Society is mourning the victims of the Kent air disaster, says the - " Daily Mail. Several dinners and dances have been cancelled. The fact is. disclosed that the chief reason for Viscountess Edham’s flight to England was to complete arrangements for the erection of a miniature temple to the memory of her little son Jeremy. She had spent all her leisure hours since Christmas preparing a garden in his memory at Himley Hall, near Dudley, in which the temple was to have been erected. The old-world village of Ilimley is plunged in gloom, for Lady Ednam was greatly beloved. Her five-year-old son Peter was playing happily in the house to-day, not having been told of his mother’s death. j At Belfast flags are flying at halfmast in the Government buildings jn token of the Marquess of Dufferinfs death. Preparations had been made for a merry-making celebration of the homecoming of the Earl of Ava and his brideat the Marquess’ seat, Clandeboye, blit have been abandoned. Instead, arrangements are being made for the Marquesjs’ funeral on Thursday. The Sketch says the Marquess of Dufferin did not believe in flying. He had recently made his first flight and did not like it. The late Colonel G. L. Henderson’s book, “A Complete Course of Practical Flying,” which was published on the day he was killed in the disaster near Gravesend, says: — “Ninety pci- cent, of accidents are unnecessary. Sometimes they are the direct result of oft-repeated carelessness, wilful neglect or stupidity on the part of the pilot or mechanic, although, they are very often due to foolhardy stunting for which pilots’ fiancees are responsible. Others are caused by overloading, or the weather, or neglect to notice the condition of the engine when starting.”
