CONTROL OF DAIRYING.

<To The Editor.) Sir. —On reading thd report of the meeting held in Hawera yesterday to consider the payment of a premium for Superfine quality cheese in this morn' ing’s News one could not help thinking that the Very man whoso wise counsel and advice would have been helpful was not invited to attend, namely, Mr. Singleton, Dairy Commissioner for New Zealand. A man of secondary importance to the industry was brought up from Wellington for some unknown reason. The proper authority to inaugurate a ‘■'premium for finest, - ’ the Control Board, was apparently airaid to tackle the problem, as it carried the following resolution at its last meeting (see page 42 “Dairy Produce Exporter”) : ‘‘That as the Board does not possess sufficient power to carry into effect the recommendations of the Hamilton conference, it is prepared to heartily assist in promoting a voluntary scheme in any particular district which may have the effect of improving the. cheese quality, and the board’s officers would ho available to undertake the work in this connection.” The board under the complete control of marketing nehcmc. for which it had ample power, was able to nay a substantial premium for finest .quality. Since when has it Jost, its power ? *)no cannot help thinking that the dairy industry is much overburdened with ‘‘hoards,’’ and it would he almost appear us if the Taranaki IMJeratiou in attempting to usurp 11m position o r the Dairy Division of the Department of Agriculture, or at least to try to act a.i dictators to it. It w:m)d be much better for all concerned if research work was left entirely to th<. Mi’S.scy College, and the parochial system of research abandoned; it would certainly be a saving in hard cash, especially at the present time, whim i-ron-oniy is so u.wesssary. The •■Hamilton incident,’’ which .should have bewn forgotten, was made the excuse for a personal attack on Mr. Singleton, which wuh in worst, i'isle than what happened at the Ham ilton meeting, and must be deplored by rdl lovers of fair play. While on the subject or "imards.” could yon inform your readers of some of the costs of running the Control Board: — fl) The chairman’s salary, including allowances, and the cost of trip to Britain. (2) Deputy chairman’s salary and al- | lawances. (3) Individual members of Hie board, including allowances (I) Secretary’s salary. (5) Cost of office staff. I. am, etc., DAI RY MAM. July 29, 1930.
