MANAWATU WINTER MEETING

■; t LATEST FROM .AMi’NT.; ?• ■?

(By

“Paritutu.”)

Cold, windy weather, but little rain, has been experienced at Awapuni this week, and the tracks yesterday were firmer than usual at this time of the year. Practically all the horses engaged were on the scene on Tuesday evening, and, good as to-day’s fields are, it appears as if they will be even stronger on Saturday. It is somewhat of a novelty for Palmerstbnians to enjoy a steeplechase meeting on the home course. H. Dulieu was at Bulls on Tuesday afternoon, and schooled Opa, Nippy and Whcnuatonga. The firstjnamed, who 'still carries an ugly knee, fenced smartly, but Nippy jumped 'very, big and ran off at a gap' in the rails made previously by Whcnuatonga. The latter, who is an unruly customer, jumped well ujratil he got to the back of the course, where tlie shadows were bad, .and lie carried away the inside rail, cutting his . stifle slightly as ;ho sailed into : the plough. Whether he will be fit to start at Awapuni is doubtful, but. he -will hardly be likely to show.his true form if he 'does. Opa should run well, if his. knee stands, but Nippy has a whole lot, to learn yet before he will be a good jumping proposition. Marjoram, in the same stable, looks very fit, and should go really well at the meeting.. Llyn Du looks the fittest horse in training, at Awapuni, and should runforward at this week’s meeting. Corneroff appeared to be* a trifle sore when' exercised on Tuesday morning, but it may ’not be *t any consequence. Blue Paper, another of Mrs. McDonald’s charges, was never better. Blacksmith, who knocked himself about when he fell on Monday morning, is an unlikely funner to-day. Coon Song, who showed winning-form at the' Wellington winter, -meeting, went well on the tracks on Tuesday morning, and will have a big -following there to-, day. Malahat is showing signs of lame.- . ness. Archeria is a good jumper, and has been : working well. Potoaform looks, bright; and should soon attract the judge’s attention. . The weather • pro? . misefs to be fine;,for the opening day of , the meeting. / ./' ,; ’ / ■• / .•> /“. -j,
