MARKETING OF FRUIT
HOUSE 'CALLS FOR INQUIRY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. On the motion of the Hon. P. A. Perrelle it was decided in the House of Representatives to-day that the Industries and Commerce Committee be instructed to investigate the marketing metluds used in the sale of fresh fruit and vegetables, New Zealand grown and imported from the islands and other overseas countries through the various channels of distribution from the grower to tho consumer, methods of packing, grading, standardisation and transport to the markets, rates of commission, .receiving and delivery charges and cool storage charges at present being made by auctioneers, merchants and others and the system of accounting to the growers, the various methods of selling
and displaying products in wholesale and auction marts, the margin of profits cbUvined by the various vzholesaie and retail distributors and- the method of displaying and selling to the public in retail shops, such other relative matters os the committee might deem desirable and generally to report whether th present marketing methods with respect to the sale of fresh fruit and vegetables were in the best interests of the grower and consumer, and if not what recommendations could be submitted by the committee, the general adoption of which, would result in more economical distribution, assuring satisfactory returns to the grower and reasonable prices to the consume”. In reply to Mr. Coates, w T ho asked what was the object of the motion, the Prime Minister stated it was in fulfilment of a promise he had given a recent deputation of interested bodies.
