PIGS POULTRY AND PEOPLE. . I '
(To the Editor.) ■Sir,—All interested in the milling and wheat industries must view with grave misgiving the decision announced in the recent Budget that the-, new surtax duty is not to apply to wheat or flour. To •understand the- seriousness of this injustice it hould be realised that on today’s export price in Sydney for flour (£8 17s Gd a ton less 1 per cent, f.0.b.), the duty will be barely equal to 79 per cent, of invoice value. To be exact it is but seven pounds a ton of 20001 b. On milling wheat, for which the local price iii Sydney is 4s, the duty is only 25.84 d a bushel. Perhaps on fowl wheat it might be a bit more, and I have certainly forgotten the primage duty, but probably^that will come off in six months. Pampering, the. pig and poultry persons again, barley is to be free of duty. Just fancy ! Barley is free, and so is water at Mokau!—I am, etc., WEEPING WILLIE.
