GLADSTONE’S PAPERS
GIFTS TO TIIE NATION. WILL OF YOUNGEST SON. A long list of legacies to servants is contained in tho will of the late Viscount Gladstone, who died recently. Lord Gladstone, who left £64,138, bequeathed to his wife all his real estate, movable chattels (except money and securities and documents of title), including all his letters, manuscripts, papers, copyrights and royalties to be disposed of as she thinks fit, and the residue of his property. Among the documents are papers of the period when he was the first Gov-ernor-General of .South Africa, between 1910 and 1914.
Before he died Lord Gladstone signed an agreement with the British Museum authorities under which the priceless collection of papers belonging to his great father are to come into the possession of the museum. Mr. Henry Neville Gladstone has just done the nation an unrepayable service in handing over all his father’s papers in his possession to the custody of the British Museum. A more important collection of documents thus to pass into public possession can hardly be imagined.
