AN INTERESTING POINT.

WAS A WALK-OVER A WIN ?

After The Bastard had won the Yorkshire Cup a technical question was raised. Although no actual objection was lodged, the stewards were asked by R. W. Colling, the trainer of Dark Hillock, who finished second, whether The Bastard. should not have carried a penalty in the race, as the result of his walk over for The Whip at the Newmarket first spring meeting, on May 8. . The stewards, after considering the matter, found it necessary to refer the question to the stewards of the Jockey Club.

The conditions of the Yorkshire Cup stated that “a winner after May 8 at noon to carry six pounds extra.” The Bastard walkcd-ovcr for The "Whip at 1.15 p.m. on May 8. The conditions did not indicate the winner bf any race or of any particular sum, but merely specified “a winner,” and the matter seems to hinge on the question as to whether The Whip can be described as a match or private sweepstakes under rule 120, which state?, “extra weights shall not be incurred in respect of matches or private sweepstakes.”

Under the Rules of Racing, winnings include “dividing, walking-over, and. receiving forfeit,” and the conditions of The Whip lay down that “in the event of there being no race, a horse the property of the holder if there is no challenge, or the horse named by the challenger if the challenge is not accepted, must walk-over.”

It can be argued on one hand that a walk-over is a race, and that therefore The Bastard, by walking-over, is a virtual winner. /

On the other hand, it can be debated that The Whip is not “a race” under the recognised Rules of Racing, and that there can be no penalty for winning something which is not “a race.” It will be interesting to know how the Jockey Club stewards will view ft matter which lias proved snuch ,>a puzzle to the local stewards. . t-m i.
