FORGERY AND POLITICS
BERLIN COURT’S DECISION. GEORGIAN PATRIOT GAOLED. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Berlin, July 21. The verdict in the Karuuidze case, which in effect legally sanctioned counterfeiting as a political weapon, was today reversed by the Appellate Court and Professor Shalva Karunidze was sentenced to 34 months’ imprisonment. His confederates were sentenced to shorter terms and fined. There was a surprising end to the first trial of Karuffidze, “uncrowned King of Georgia,” his compatriot Sadathieraschwill and six Germans on the charge of conspiracy to forge masses of Russian notes in the hope of causing an economic collapse in Russia and the overthrowing of the Soviet by' a rush attack. Three of the defendants were acquitted. The court ordered the proceedings against the remainder to be abandoned, and declared the defendants were actuated by unselfish political motives and were entitled to the amnesty granted political prisoners on the occasion of President Hindenburg’s 80th birthday. ’
