Countering a fusillade of pistol bullets with , his double-barrelled giui, Mr. William Holloway, garage proprietor, of Rosedale, Victoria, recently drove away four men, who, it is thought, intended to rob his • premises on the night of July 2. Rosedale is 12 miles from Traralgon, in Gippsland. Mr. Holloway eaid that he was awak- . ened about 12.30 a.m. by the sound of someone tampering with the door of hid garage. He got out of bed and went out to investigate. Four men were standing in the darkness .near the door of the garage. They moved away when they saw him and he returned to thehouse for life gun, which he loaded. Mr. Holloway overtook the men. on the road and ordered them to put their hands up- They moved to the opposite, side of the road and approached a . sedan car, which had the motor running. Mr. Holloway, however, reached the car and fired a shot into a rear tyre, disabling it. ' ' ■ Suddenly three of the men pulled out revolvers and commenced to fire at him. He replied by firing t at the legs of one man, who he thought was wounded. The men fired further shots, none of which took effect, and when Mr. Holloway fired they turned and fled, disappearing into the forest country. The car was found to contain a complete house-breaking, and safe-blowing outfit, including detonators and gelignite.
