COMPREHENSIVE CHANGE PETROL TO PAY 3D MORE SMOKING TO BE DEARER PRIMAGE' IN NEW GUISE By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The following are sonic of the chief alterations in the Customs tariff, which will be. effective to-morrow, subject to Section 143 of the Customs Act, 1913, Jiavins been made by resolutions submitted to Parliament this evening:— Increases are made on the following: Cigarettes, from 255. 6d. to 335. 9d. per 10007 and from 10s. 6d. to 13s. 9d. per lb. Cigars, from 12s. to 15s. per lb. Rough sawn timber, duty increased by 2s. 6d. per 100 superficial feet. Sawn dressed timber, increased to Ils. 6d. Fresh small fruits, increased from Id. to 2d. per lb. Motor spirits, increased from 4<l. to 7d. per gallon. The foregoing goods are liable at the same rate if of British or foreign origin. The rates on the following goods are increased: British and foreign apparel—Hosiery, British rate increased 21 per cent., foreign 5 per cent. Motor vehicles, foreign increased by 5 per cent., and body duty, British and foreign, increased by lj P er cent. The allowance for under-proof spirits is abolished. Increases have been- made in the rates on the following goods, if of foreign origin:— Onions, from 30s. to £4 a ton. Jams, from 4d. to sd. per lb. Watches, from 20 per cent, to 45 per cent. Lubricating oil, from Bd. to Is. per gallon.' Electric lamp bulbs, duty increased by one-fourth. The rate on the following foreign goods (inter alia) is increased by 5 per cent. ad. valorem: Confectionery, preserved fruits, provisions, soap, chemicals, drugs, apparel made to order, drapery, haberdashery, laces, ribbons, woollens, millinery, hats, boots (other than children’s), leather manufactures, tyres for motor vehicles, glass bottles and jars, glassware, chinaware, clocks, fancy. goods, toys, jewellery, plated ■ware, cinematographs, phonographs and Acords, musical • instruments, photo goods, toilet requisites, stationery, pajicrhangings, firearms, cartridges,, hard ware, metal manufactures, cash registers, type- , writers, electrical machinery and appliances, pumps, weighing machines, industrial machinery and appliances; artificers’ tools, motor-cycles, lubricating greases, basketware, furniture, woodenware, brushware, plate. Primage is abolished except for Australian goods, and a surtax 1 on duty payable on dutiable goods is substituted' at the rate of one-twentieth of the duty in the case of tobacco, cigarettes, spirits, timber. and petrol; and nine-fortieths of the duty on all other goods except wheat and flour, which are exempt from both primage and surtax. Barley after August 31 is exempt, except when for the manufacture of beer. The increases in duty do not in the meantime apply to Australia. Leaf tobacco is reduced by Is. per lb. British and foreign. The following are the increases in the excise duties: — Cut and plug tobacco, increased Is. per lb. Cigarettes made by machinery, increased to Ils. per lb. New Zealand beer, minimum duty increased from lljjd. to Is. per gallon.
