TO-DAY’S RUGBY MATCHES

TO-DAY’S GOOD PROGRAMME.

SCHOOL AND COMPETITION PLAY.

New Plymouth Boys’ High School v. Hamilton Boys’ High School, Pukekura Park, 1.15 p.m. Star v. Old Boys, at Pukekura Park. Inglewood v. Okato, at Okato. Stratford v. Clifton, at Waitara, Celtic v. Tukapa, at Stratford. Kaponga v. Opunake, at Kaponga. Ilawera v. Patea, at Pa tea. Athletic v. Waimate, at Ilawera. Eltham v. Okaiawa, at Eltham.

Though last Saturday’s matches placed Old Boys and Opunake a point ahead in their respective divisions of the Taranaki Rugby Union, the senior competition in each section is by no means decided, as there arc four more matches to be played. In the north the issue is now confined to Stratford and Old Boys and their fortunes will be followed with interest. To-day Old Boys will meet Star at New Plymouth, and though the former should again easily defeat Star, they have proved an uncertain quantity in the past. However, given a reasonably dry ball they should be able to maintain the supremacy, though Star's forwards may be expected to go well if it is a day to suit them. Stratford gained a narrow victory over Clifton in the first round after a hardfought game and will have another hard fight to-day. Clifton is a greatly improved team, with young dashing forwards and fast backs.

In the south three teams are in tho picture, and a stern struggle will be witnessed to the end. To-day the leader, Opunake, meets Kaponga. In tho first round on i;t. own ground Opunake could only win by three points to nil. and to-day will have to visit Kaponga, which is always harder to beat on its own ground. Kaponga has proved a thorn in the side of all the leaders this year.

At Patea there should be a sterling struggle between Ilawera and the local team to retain the position of runnerup, each being a point behind Opunake. When they met at Ilawera in the first round a three-point draw resulted. With evenly matched forwards and fast backs in each side a great game should result. Ilawera has been improved by the inclusion of A. Smith, Auckland wing three-quarter. The other matches, though of interest to the teams, can have no. bearing in the result. In the north Inglewood journeys to Okato, When these team's met at Inglewood- Okato had the better of the game and was unlucky to be defeated by 5 to 3. Tukapa and Celtic also played , a close game at New Plymouth, and there should not be much between them I at Stratford today. The meeting of Waiinate and Athletic at Ilawera should provide the public with a fast game, whilst at Eltham the local team will meet Okaiawa.
