CAPTAIN ORDERED OFF FIELD., RUGBY REFEREES’ DISCUSSION. The action of Mr. W. H. Burgess, Opunake, when refereeing a junior Rugby match between Opunake and Athletic on July 5 in ordering the Athletic captain off, was discussed at a meeting of the South Taranaki Referees’ Association last' night.
The Athletic Club wrote that on this occasion the referee appointed had not attended, Mr. Burgess consenting to act in his stead. The club added that as Mr. Burgess was not a member of the Referees’ Association he would not have the knowledge of the game that a properly appointed official would. When the captain of tho Athletic team had appealed to the referee against a decision he ■hail been ordered off. This, the club contended, the referee had no. right to AO. ' .
The Taranaki Rugby Union forwarded a, letter it had'received frdm thd ‘Athletic Club asking'for : a' replay of the match in question. Worded rather differently to the one received by the referees’ Association; the letter to the’union stated it was “understood” Mr. Burgess was not a member of the (association../ The meeting referred' The'matter to Mr. A.
