ALLEGED ROUGH RUGBY
TIMARU MATCH INCIDENTS
UNION PRESIDENT CHALLENGED.
PROTEST BY TIMARU NEWSPAPER
By Telegraph.—Press Association.
Timaru, Last Night.
The Timaru Post, in an editorial replying to Dr. Adams, challenges the president of the Rugby Union to either substantiate or withdraw his charges, characterising his outburst as defamatory, and declaring that the latest exhibition of petulance is no justification for the inertia which has marked his actions.
“We cannot regard Dr. Adams’ statements as other than extremely loose,” the article adds. “It is his clear duty to substantiate the charges ho had made, and we challenge him to do so if he can. Dr. Adams-has a clear duty to perform; if he fails, then we hope the Rugby Union will take a hand in the business and insist on an investigation.
After referring at Wanganui to the alleged rough play, Dr. Adams said: “The disaster came when the evening paper came out before the dinner and “whitewashed” the referee and the home team.”.. Mr. 8. S. Dean, chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union, stated at Wellington to-day that the management committee .had no official information, blit since Dr. Adams’ had made a public statement the management committee would certainly consider the matter at its meeting.
