THE BREED OF JERSEYS

OPERATIONS OF STRATFORD CLUB

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING,

About 20 members attended the annual meeting of the' Stratford Jersey Cattle Club yesterday. The meeting displayed keen enthusiasm for the welfare of the breed and there was competition for the election of executive officers. Mr. D. O’Sullivan presided. The annual report stated that four meetings,, of members and eight of the executive had been held. Subscriptions for the year amounted to £42 15s, compared with £24 ,15s last year, and trie balance-sheet disclosed a surplus of £4l 5s 5d over liabilities. The annual demonstration field day and cow-judging competitions had been held on the property of Mr. E. J. Kirkwood. Mr. E. Griffiths, who at all times had been most willing to place his services at the club’s disposal, had again officiated as demonstrator and judge of the competitions. A large number of farmers had been present. .The smoke concert had been a complete success, the presence of lady vocalists adding a great deal to the evening’s pleasure. The competition for the third futurity stakes would conclude at the next Stratford show, 17 animals remaining in to date of the 44 nominated. The- sales held' dui'ing -the past 12 months could not be regarded as a huge success though the bull .sale had certainly been good. The' female sale last month did not come up to expectations and the committee suggested that the time was opportune to'go into the question of changing the dates. The committee applied for a date' for the 1931 female sale (the day after the New Plymouth club’s sale) but the only date offered was May 5, the last date of a series of six sales. ' '

The Jersey section of the Stratford show was again well up to the Stratford standard and the classes inserted at the instigation of the club had done much to bring about the present high quality and large number of exhibits.

' ELECTION OF OFFICERS, - The following officers were elected for the ensuing year: President, .Mr.- D. O’Sullivan; vice-president, Mr. S. Gadsby; committee, Messrs, W. Johnson, 11. J. Have, 0. McAloon, C. Clemow and G. R. Bell; auditor, Mr, R. V. Kay. Mr. Ross was voted an honorarium of £26 ss. ’ ■ . Certificate of record classes at the Stratford show were discussed, but details governing the competition already decided upon, were left to the. executive. Provided satisfying arrangements could be made with the Stratford A. and P. Association, the committee was recommended to hold the next sale of pedigree bulls and of- pedigree females, at the showgrounds, where stock could be kept .under cover and displayed to better advantage. The council- of the New Zealand Jersey Cattle Association was congratulated upon the manner in which it was attending to the interests of the breed. “There are now 2040 members,” said the chairman, “and this fact alone shows the great popularity of the breed in New Zealand.” Mrs, Smiley, Matau, and Mr. J. 1. Trott, Wharehuia,* were elected new members. ' , STRATFORD HOSPITAL. CONTROLLING BODY MEETS, The monthly meeting of the Stratford Hospital Board was held yesterday, those present being Messrs. W. L, Kennedy (chairman), J. T. Belcher, M. Gernhoefer, E. S. Rutherfurd, G. P. Harkness, E. Marfell and Mrs. M. T. Phillips, The matron (Mrs. J. Hunt) reported a number of staff movements and recommended that Nurse Watt be promoted to staff nurse to fill the vacancy caused by the departure of Nurse Meredith. On the recommendation of the Health Department she asked to have a glass ca.se made in which to place the recently acquired teaching appliances. Permission to. purchase a case was granted. The medical superintendent (Dr. D. Steven) reported that the number of patients admitted during the month had been 40, discharged 20, died 2, remaining 31, out-patients attended 10, admissions to maternity ward 11, births 10, visits to ante-natal clinic 76. A total of 15 surgical and medical cases had been attended during the month, reported the district nurse (Miss M. Myers) at Whangamomona. Fees received had been £2 4s fid. The visiting committee reported that the matron considered the accommodation for wood and coal was not sufficient and the committee recommended that the present shed be extended. The matron also urged the necessity for another bathroom upstairs in the nurses’ home. The extension of the wards had prevented any access round the front of the building by way of the terrances. It would be necessary for the board when the extensions had progressed a little further to consult a landscape expert to plan fresh terrace formation. As the alterations to the hospital would occasion great inconvenience and probably annoyance to the matron and the staff of the hospital the committee suggested that the board’s architect be asked to keep closely in touch with the matron and staff as to the proposed alterations so as to minimise friction. An extension of the wood and coal shed was authorised, the architect being instructed to prepare a report in the matter of the bathroom. The committee’s suggestion regarding the terraces met with approval but no definite decision was arrived at.

FARMERS’ CO-OP. STAFF BALL. The staff and shareholders of the Farmers’ Co-operative Organisation Society will hold a ball at the Town Hall, Eltham, on Friday. Those desirous of attending should make immediate application for invitations to the secretaries, Messrs. ; E. Newland and J. A. Clemoes, Eltham, or at the company’s branch offices, as only a limited number of invitations are now available. Wills’ Melody Makers orchestra Ims been engaged.
