ROOT-GROWING—-CALF-REARING. NUMEROUS FIRST AWARDS. An enviable record in the Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs competitions is held by the Taylor family, of Fraser Road. Three members have between them won three championships and 23 first prizes, as well as a number of riiinoi’ plaeings. The detailed records are:— Bernard Taylor.—Second in mangold championship, two firsts in. mangold group competition, second in carrot championship, first in carrot group competition. Ronald Taylor.—First in . mangold championship, first in mangold group competition, third in carrot championship, first in carrot group competition. Gladys Taylor. --Second in mangold championship, five firsts in mangold group competition, two thirds in carrot group competition, two firsts in calfrearing championship, six firsts in group calf-rearing competitions, eight firsts in school calf-rearing competitions, first and champion Egmont Show calf-rearing competition. Gladys Taylor competed for the last time this year,, not meeting with quite the same degree of success, She received full points for cultivation/;, but the yield of her crops brought her down to the average for the’ group, though she headed the Fraser Road entries. / The . three Taylors . possess & remarkable collection of trophies gained in these competitions, . . 1 “VARIABLE STARS.” ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY - LECTURE. A lecture on ’•“Variable, stars’’- was given to the Hawera Astronomical Society on Monday evening by Mr. E. J. Booth. The lecturer exhibited graphs depicting variations in magnitude of the several types of variable stars over lengthy periods, and explained that in some cases the variations were due to eclipsing double stars —in one case a cluster of four emphasised the fluctuation, due to mutual eclipsing. The other factor, , which, is indeed the, only factor in the case of-single variables, remains the. .subject of research, which is being carried out all over the world by observers whose reports are sent to the variable star sections of the principal observatories. It is . hoped that analysis of results over a sufficiently long pjriod will yield information that may reveal the cause of the variability, Mr. A. H..Larkman .was..chairman. HAWERA ORANGE LODGE. TWENTY-ONE YEARS-OE. PROGRESS The twenty-first birthday celebrations of the Hawerfl Loyal Orange Lodge were concluded with .ft social on Monday evening. There were about 50 couples present, including visitors from Wanganui, New Plymouth, Eltham and Inglewood, lodges. 1 ■ Dancing was enjoyed, the programme opening with a picturesque grand march with members of the various lodges in their regalia. Songs were sung by Miss Cocker, Eltham, and bagpipes solos given bj Mr. A. Gower; Eltham. Mr. Barleyman, jun., supplied the dance music, and Mr; Gebbie. Was M.C. . . . , A large birthday cake with 21 candles was cut by Mr. T. Trask, the first master. ■....’ The W:M. spoke of different matters that were connected vzith the advancement of the interests of the order, and .appealed to those who. were.not members to resolve to join. He said that unity was strength, and he was pleased to say that with the help of the ladies’ and the men’s lodges, No. 44 would become one of the best and strongest in the Dominion; in numbers and in influence. ’ TE KIRI EUCHRE PARTIES. . The euchre, party • an<F dance held in the' Waiteika school room at Clements’ Mill was a. bright function. The prizes were won. ;by Mrs. 'W. West and Mr. G. Maehray. Supper was served by local ladies, and Mr. C. Thompson was master of ceremonies/ Mesda.mes W. Hodges 'and C. Porteofls provided the music.' The prizes • were donated by Messrs. G. Maehray and B, Dobbs. Mr. A. Lowe controlled the euchre/ 1 . • The monthly meeting of the committee was held last wee.., Mr. W. Hodges presiding. Mr, D, Clement (secretary) reported that the euchre parlies had been a huge success. It was decided to write to Mesdanies A. Lowe and F. West and Mr. T. F. Graham, conveying the committee’s appreciation of their efforts for the school. It was also decided to purchase a football for the boys and a basketball for the girls. The teacher reported that the roll was 35. AWATUNA TOPICS.

A number of ladies attended an afternoon last week at the residence of Mrs. Niecolls. Competitions were won by Mesdames Lind and Davison. Mrs. Hughes, on behalf of the ladies present, presented Mrs. Davis, who is leaving the district, with a cake stand, at the same time thanking her for her help in the district. Those present ■ included Mcsdarnes Hughes, Davis, Thompson, Bankhead, Bailey, Alty, Boyd, Corbett, Harvey, Lind; Davisoii and Miss M. Hughe's. At the monthly meeting of- the W.D.F.CJ, at Riverlea last Tuesday, there was a good attendance. Mrs. Bourke, the president, gave a number of details regarding doings at the recent conference. The branch is -steadily increasing' in membership. i 1
