ACCIDENT NEAR HAWERA

JUDGE BROWNE INJURED. LIGHT CAR OVERTURNS. The South Road near Hawera was the scene of another accident yesterday, Judge Browne, of the Native Land Court, and Mrs. Browne having a narrow escape when their car overturned. Mrs. Browne was driving her husband from Wanganui to Hawera in a small closed car. On the straight just south of Hawera the car skidded on the road, still slippery from frost, and overturned. Mr. Browne suffered chest injuries and shock, which will confine him to a private hospital for- some days. Mrs. Browne was more fortunate, suffering only shock, The car was much damaged. .... FIRES AT HAWERA. .THREE WEEK-END OUTBREAKS. . Three ■ incipent outbreaks of fire occurred at Hawera. during the week-end, but on each occasion the brigade received an early call and was able to extinguish the fires with comparatively little trouble.

About 7.3 a p.m. on Saturday night a call was received to the two-storey house of Mr. G. A. Burgess, South Road, where an outbreak had occurred in the vicinity of the sitting-room chimney. Little damage was done. The residence, it is reported, was insured for £l7OO, the insurance on the furniture being £5OO. . •. < Slightly over two hours later, at 9.50 p.m., the brigade was called to King Edward Park, where a toi-toi hedge was found afire. About two weeks ago the brigade had received another call to King Edward Park, a blazing toi-toi hedge on that occasion being extinguished with difficulty, Incendiarism is suspected. The brigade’s third call was on Sunday afternoon to a chimney fire in Victoria Street.

FOUR BALL BOGEY COMPETITION.

Some good rounds were played on Saturday in the Hawera Golf dub’s fourball bogey competition, the best cards being:— Giblin and Valentine 8 up. Ritchie and Syme 7 up. Baigent and Freyne 5 up. Sturrock and Young 3 up. Jones and A. G. Walker 1 up. Vinnicombe and W, G. Sutton all square. During the week-end four interesting matches were played in the Anderson Cup fixture, when O’Callaghan beat Lawn 2 and 1, F. W. Sutton beat G. A. Meyrick 2 up, Grace beat Valentine 2 and 1, Little beat Syme 2 and 1, Last Wednesday Patea sent a team of 13 players to Hawera. The Hawera club proved too strong, winning by five games to two. Results, with Hawera players mentioned first, are: — O’Callaghan and Sinclair beat Fraser and Hunger. Hunt and JBlair lost to Rook and Hughes. Champion and Vinnicombe beat Gilbert and Pettigrew. Simpson and .Sagar lost to Mitchell and Shields. . G. F. Strange and Dalgetty beat Jones and Honeyfield. Harrop and Robb beat Haggerty and Harris. Mortlock beat Bowen. PERSONAL ITEMS. The death occurred at New' Plymouth on Saturday night of Mr. Charles James Rowe, Miluioe Street, Hawera, after an illness of some weeks. An old resident 0f Hawera, Mr, Rowe had for some years been a society steward and trustee of the Methodist Church. At the church on Sunday sympathy with Mrs. Rowe and family was expressed. The late Mr Rowe is survived by his widow and a family of five—two daughters, Edna and Merle, and three sons, Leonard, Frank anil Ivan. . Messrs. T. R. Overton and R. P. Bai"ent, engineer and secretary respectively to the South Taranaki Electric Power Board, leave Hawera this morning vO attend the annual conference of the Power Boards’ Association at Wellington. They will also attend the conferences of power board engineers and secretaries’ associations. Mr. R. A. Noedl, Palmerston North, is visiting Hawera. OTAKEHO NEWS. (From. Our Own Correspondent.) Mr. and Mrs. S. le Fleming have returned after spending an extended holiday in the South Island. Miss J. Campbell has returned to the district. Miss B. Putt is spending a holiday m New Plymouth. . Mr. L. Bolter bas returned to Okato after spending a few days in Otakeho. Mr. S. J. Grecnhiil had a lucky escape when ho fell from his windmill and received nothing more than a shaking. The prizes at the weekly cuelire parly were won by Miss White (Ist), Miss Griffin (2nd). Tho Ramblers v. Otakeho hockeymatch on Wednesday resulted in a win for the Otakeho team by 2 goals to nil. AUROA NEWS. There was a record attendance at the euchre parties on Wednesday, when Mr, Cate and Mrs. King won the prizes. Supper was provided and Messrs. Hartley and Wood were responsible for the success of the whole evening. Under tho supervision of the teachers the Auroa eehool children are practising. for their fancy dress dance to be ■ held on Friday evening.,
